But there were slide rules. They were easy enough to us...
I had one, in a plastic case - but never got the hang of it... Calculators came in JUST in time!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
But there were slide rules. They were easy enough to use..
There certainly were. I still have mine - it cost 25 shillings in 1964. There were also log tables, provided free of charge. However, logs, and therefore slide rules, were not on the curriculum till secondary in those days*, so we had perforce to use our brains in primary school, 1960-62. And a Good Thing, too. I'd have the answer by mental arithmetic in the time it took you to take your slide rule from its case.
*This means they're probably taught only to honours maths students now.

Ah, the benefit of youth! My father went to Hong Kong on business in the early 70s, and brought me a calculator. It used a 9 volt battery, had only the four basic functions, and didn't even have a decimal point, but it created quite a stir when I took it into work.
Nice sunny weather in Newport today...about 65 F. No don't feel like getting out my slide rule to do the convesion. My father was the king of the slide rules. He always had one in his back pocket. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was a consultant for Texas Instruments when they were developing the pocket calculator. I remember the reverence with which the very first pocket calculator was treated when it came into the house. It was a free TI model. The early ones were very expensive (several hundred dollars). By the time my childern were in school in the early 90s, pocket calculators were quite cheap to buy unless you had to get a graphing calculator.
Gorgeous weather in the Pennines this morning: shorts and sunblock stuff. (The Met office seem to be altering their forecasts for round here by the hour! Last night we were predicted overcast weather with some rain.) Off to Howarth this afternoon - glad I probably won't need my brolley. (Taking it with me, just in case, all the same - you can take the lad out of Lancashire ... )

Still hot - 32 degrees and the water pressure is low again (thank goodness for the well). Normally the rainy season would start about now, but there's no let-up yet.
We bought a big air-conditioning unit today (a stand-alone thing) - AND a bar!!! This is a very Philippine thing. It's now my job to covince Mrs Pabs that, if you have a bar unit, you need bottles of alcohol to decorate it.

Well now... "Brummie Simon" is fairly certain about the prospect of a heatwave, beginning in a week to 10 days' time.
Slight rain here first thing, as I rose much earlier than my usual to attend the local NHS centre to get my injured leg seen to. I hadn't dared take off the second bandage, but the doctor said the wound is slowly repairing, which is to be expected, given it is located halfway down the shin. The nurse removed the cross strips put on at Kings following the cycle accident and stuck on a "shower but not bath-proof" bandage. At least I can now take showers, persons nearby will be doubless relieved to hear, and the bandage being padded should mean less discomfort at night. There was a 30 yard queue outside the surgery prior to opening at 8 o'clock, and apparently it is one of the worst for compaints in London, but by accepting a diferent doctor from my usual I was seen within an hour.
BBC forecast for today was totally inaccurate! The heavy showers and lowish temperatures never materialised. Instead we've had a glorious day here. Forecast this morning predicted temps around 14 degrees but in the event turned out to be 24!
However, we did have a heavy shower at around 7pm.

Ditto here - but not as warm as you were at just under 20° and just a bit of light drizzle early evening. It was a much better day overall than Sunday, more blue, more sun and less wind. Today started very grey but it's slowly improving, sun coming through now, heavy showers forecast around teatime which is ok as I got my plants in at the weekend.
I shall mark June 10 on the calendar as Start of Heatwave and see what happens ..... Glad your leg is healing S_A - but how is your toe?

Much better thanks Anna!
Low stratus with thin continuous drizzle and poor visibility here right now; gentle west-southwesterly, 16 C. Looking at the weather charts for Friday and Saturday, which show a deep low settling just west of Ireland, I'm questioning somewhat the predicted heatwave next week, though a bit more warmth would be welcome were it to come true.
Things not been all that great at Castle Plantagenet. My mother last week had an angina attack, a bad one too, then last night my dad had a bad fall. Both are quite elderly, so always rather worrying. But at least the weather is good.

Beautiful weather here. Blue skies, sunshine, light breeze. Perfect weather for leading a walking tour this AM. Clouds, and maybe rain, are moving in for tomorrow. I'll actually be glad for a bit of rain as the garden soil is now quite dry. My 60-gallon rain barrel is only a quarter full and needs topping up.
