Wales & SW have a Met Office rain warning, I think London & SE will get it this evening, then we get it worse from the early hours onwards. Today has been lovely, a clear sky overnight leading to endless blue skies and sun, light breeze. A little cloudy now.
I did enjoy reading the account of your garden visit, it sounds a good afternoon out. Funnily enough, when I lived for a while in SW19 round the corner was Effra Road, I assumed the lost river was underneath the road but reading what you posted I realise I was totally wrong which makes me wonder why the road got its name. (As to gardening, if anyone is interested I've bought a Raymond Evison patio clematis 'Parisienne' which took Chelsea by storm last year)

Heavy thunderstorms would appear to be on the way, hitting around or after midnight. Just my luck. I hardly got any sleep last night after being knocked off my bike going to a gig I never made it to, landing up in the A&E at Kings, the very one made famous by the Channel 4 series, where they did an AEG on me, dressed a deep would on my right shin with adhesive strips, and X-rayed a broken toe! I didn't get to bed this morn until 3.15 am! Of course I felt energised, the very opposite of in shock, and wanted to get to my Tuesday night gig rather than hang about waiting for the fuzz, and it wasn't until today that the respective bits of pain and discomfort have all clicked in in one go, together with the annoyance of finding only 1 24-hours open police station to submit my accident report within 4 miles. Such reports have to be registered within 24 hours of an accident, I'm told. Now I'm told I could have entered all the details online, saving an out train journey and return on the bus!

Oh the Effra, or the main part of it, Anna, does indeed flow underground alongside Effra Road. Apparently there's a line of trees still there, marking what was once the river bank. Amazing to think you once lived 3 miles from me; I love this part of London, which has probably been considerably ameliorated since the times you were here.

Oh No!! Poor you That's awful news, how did it happen, did the motorist just swerve out? Lucky you always wear a helmet! Lots of rest and painkillers, is your toe strapped up or plastered? So you'll be out of action for a bit, what about your bike, badly damaged? I'm quite shocked, it's so dangerous cycling in London - are you insured (I don't cycle so don't know about these things) Hope you got some sleep last night, take it easy.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, S_A. Hope you make a quick recovery.

Quite why a C21 country, with the 6th biggest economy in the world, cant manage decent cycle infrastructure, proper public transport, and good provision for our roads is beyond me. Oh thats right, i remember now, we need to subsidise banks, pay the corporation tax for the likes of amazon, and pay for wars and a nuclear arsenal.

Weather was dismal here yesterday, wall to wall rain and very cool and windy. Forecast is for cool and drier today.

My daughter is a nurse in the A&E at St George's in Tooting. Channel 4 are starting to film there (from today I believe), so we may have a TV star in the family!

Bloody hell S_A only just caught up with this!! Gulp (10 minutes away from climbing aboard my bike...)... Commiserations!

(OT: the BBC weather vagaries continued last night, I was very happy to note as it meant a dry ride home. Mind you, you did suggest this kind of weather is v difficult to predict accurately. Sunny morning here, hoping for a dry run into the long weekend!)

The guilty party was a van to my right which moved off as the lights changed. I was going straight on where Queens Road is joined by New Cross Road, but it swerved to the left, hitting me on its left side, then proceeded to the right of central pedestrian crossing bollards, head on into oncoming traffic , to park up at some shops. The woman driver said "Sorry no speak Engleesh" and while bystanders all said "They'll be illegals" no one offered me a phone to call the police! I took an Ibuprofen at six this morning for the pain, then woke up at ten and am now in much less discomfort, thankfully. Apparently Paracetamol and the usual painkillers are OK with the drugs regime I'm on. Everyone - well, the doctor - insists I get a helmet, but I've tried and found them uncomfortable (maybe my head's the wrong shape) and in 30 years' cycling with many accidents I've never landed on me bonce - the nearest being when I smashed my nose on a road surface, for which a helmet would have provided no protection, probably just strangled me.

One huge thunderstorm has just passed directly overhead here, with lightning about every 30 seconds and strange sudden bursts of violent rain with some hail, reducing visibility to under 200 metres. Must go out now and do a cloud observation!
