We've rather been blessed with winds originating further south than usual, BBM, but we now appear to be about to revert to a more regular pattern, if Weatherweb is to be believed.

Dull and dank here today with drizzle and the odd burst of rain mixed in. There's very little wind to speak of, and the clouds, which look like dirty torn curtains, don't seem to know which way they're going. So downpours seem almost certain, as predicted this lunchtime.

32 degrees C today - cooler than it has been (nights are terrible). It's forecast to drop to 29 degrees for the next few days. Where's the rain?

For anybody thinking in Fahrenheit, 32 degrees C is 90 degrees F.

... extraordinary, ain't it? - that people choose to live in such unpleasant climes as the Philippines (far too hot and sticky) or Yorkshire (far too cold)...

For me, one of the Great Mysteries of the Universe is - why, when humans toddled out of Africa and spread themselves everywhichway - when they reached, say France, - why didn't they stop, oh, I don't know,say, just south of the Loire - nice climate, fertile soil - and why did some of them bang on - not only to the latitudes of London (grim enough) or York - but on and on - to the Shetlands - to Greenland - and places of unspeakable cold. Why???

One the next couple of cold days are out of the way, the first half of May looks likely to continue relatively dry and warmish, according to Weatherweb, and the second half dominated by a huge blocking area of high pressure to the north. If the latter proves correct it will push the jet stream to the south of the UK, with low pressure systems traversing our southern half bringing a lot of rain. Of course there's the rest of June, July and August making up summer, so it's a bit early for despondence, but advisable pro tem for anyone not going abroad to make the most of the forthcoming fortnight.

Cloudy, chilly day here in Newport. The sun appeared for a few minutes and then went away. Fog horns are sounding right now. Fingers crossed that the sun comes out tomorrow.

Slightly nippy? I should say! 9 degrees C just now on my shaded N wall-situated thermometer, which is to say, the lowest at 12 noon since March 27th! The temperature actually fell to 2 C last night, so I imagine it must have been frosty further out of London.
