There was a programme yesterday, Eddie Butler on Welsh icons (why we have leeks, daffs, the flag, etc.) and a short piece about cheese on toast. He trotted out the old joke: St Peter was said to have got rid of a troublesome "company of Welchman" who were troubling the peace of heaven by going outside and shouting caws pobi – "that is as moche as to say 'Rosty'd ches!' Which thynge the Welchman herying ran out of heven a grete pace".

Cloudy and calm here in RI...calm before the storm, though now the storm has been downgraded. We're due for a dusting rather than a foot of snow!

Yes Lichfield cathedral is a lovely building and the Trent valley area is very pleasant if you ignore Rugeley power station! Did you ever go to the garden of remembrance up the A38 towards Burton?

Not surprising, given that there's a depression sitting right on top of London at the mo'. Less scary that it sounds, but it does mean that all the clouds spiralling into the centre have nowhere to go but up!

It does look as if the south of the country, the SE in particular, is in for dry weather and slightly above average temperatures from Wednesday onwards this week. Time to get the window cleaner here!

Oh wow! - beautiful low-slung rainbow to the north. The pot of gold appears to be right where the Houses of Parliament are. No surprise there then.

Mixed bag here too sunshine/showers at mo'. Just had one of latter - all dirty looking clouds heading Eastwards so they will be with you soon S_A!! Being on River Test here we have been very lucky with an escape from serious floods although there is still a lot of standing water in fields and on local roads, some of which are still closed or down to one lane. Item for national news: "B3400 waterlogged Basingstoke Cut Off!!

Good one Gordon! I believe that "hanging chads" have gone the way of the rotary phone. On topic, we've had our dusting of snow...not enough to be a nuisance but enough to make the side roads slick.

As you well know marthe a "dusting" for you is total breakdown here!! Where I was brought up in rural Wales snow was never a problem, people knew how to deal with it. Down here in the namby South it's as if the Martians had landed.

During the 1970s, I lived in or near Nottingham (not the namby South...and my husband is from oop North). Every time it snowed an inch or two, cars would spin out and the newspapers would declare the arrival of arctic conditions! I was used to New England winters and would find this quite amusing. That being said, I no longer laugh at any bad winter weather or adverse road conditions.
