The line-squally shown as a bright red curve through Wales and the northwest at lunchtime appears to have arrived a couple of hours ahead of forecast - so, here comes the reverse version of yesterday's inaccuracies reported further north. Afternoon walks look to be off the agenda at this end, for the next few days, at least.

the middle kingdom has had the most extraordinary storm; very dark sky, thunder and lighning, hail and torrential rain the streets are awash ....swmbo arrived in a panic. the butcher had said the end of the world was nigh .... actually the weather was that bad!

Decidedly hefty squalls have now reached east Berkshire. Mostly short-lived, but I would not want to be out in them. Hmm, or maybe it would be quite fun, in a bracing sort of way. No, to high a risk of branches flying through the air.

Went very dark indeed at about 3pm and let loose a mini-deluge. Spectacular lightening flashes at Cheltenham Races this afternoon.

Same here, it had become increasingly windy and then, probably around 2.30ish, all hell broke loose, couldn't see through the heavy rain, wind from WSW gusting around 43mph, black as pitch and had to put the lights on, temperature plummeted. Calmer now, but plenty of black clouds building.

Same here. It's certainly going to be a bit breezy around the kilt area going to Burns Night later on!

The cold front moved through here in about 10 minutes - approximately 3 minutes of which consisted of torrential rain, winds up to about 50 mph as an estimate, and at least 30 lightning flashes - 2 cloud-to-grounds directly overhead, which is pretty unusual around here - nearer than the Palace aerial, 600 metres up the hill, so must have hit trees. How my max-min thermometer didn't get dislodged from its railing outside my NW-facing window I'll never know; probably held down by suction! The temperature dropped from 10 C to 6.5 C in that amount of time, not particularly remarkable in view of the storm's intensity.

Currently 3C here [ 11.35 a.m.], fells virtually invisible, waterlogged fields, roaring NW wind, shovelling it down, garden flooded in places. Soil just saturated and can't take any more.

A vile day here, heavy rain and howling gale and dark. It's going to be one of those days when you need the lights on all the time. No danger of floods where I am, but the heavy rain is unrelenting.

I brought home a doggy bag of haggis from excellent Burns Night at local hostelry last night, but not sure what to do with it in the cold light of day. Fry it, maybe. A young lady gave us an excellent rendition of "Ae fond kiss" with our hostess on electric piano.

Stuff a slit chicken chicken breast aka Kiev or a Portobello mushroom? Mix it with mashed potato into balls and bake? Wrap in bacon and fry it? Crumble, add vegs, gravy, top with mash and make crofters pie?
Give it to the dog?
OT: Not sure if we've had the worst of it or it's still to come. Nice, bright and watery sun here after overnight (not particularly heavy) rain, not in the least bit cold.
