Lightning a few minutes ago here, which I wasn't expecting at all. Totally taken by surprise, as there isn't that much rain falling.

mangerton, i'm glad to hear that all are safely gathered etc and that they (insert heart) loved NY! On other fronts, lightening hmmm. we've had the dullest of days with temps just above freezing and due to go up to the 50s F tomorrow only to return to frigid temps on Tues. This will make for slick conditions on the roadways. Fender benders coming up.

hi Ams! Thanks for asking. All went well, she stayed just the night andwent over to her brother's place, which I think is better than with friends? I am glad they have made some things up, after a few years of not talking! Mum is still looking very pale but that is understandable, after what happened? As long as she takes things slowly, she be ok. MrsBBM not too bad with our visitors!! 50/50!!

Salymap's bins used to be blown all over the place in high winds - do we have any updates from her niece?
It's not been too bad here, heavy rain yesterday evening, rainly this morning but soon clearing to blue skies, then on and off blackness and squally showers. Wind no more than 35mph max and a temp of 10.8° (but you can take 2° off for windchill) I think as from Thursday it'll all have calmed down.

Thankfully, all our bin areas are enclosed so I think that possibly could help. after a wet windy start, a rather nice to see a certain yellow rounded object making an appearance during the day but alas, towards dusk and end of the afternoon, back to the usual!!

We're having a bins-blowing-all-over-the-place day. It's in the 50s F, rainy, windy, with thunderstorms promised for this afternoon as the next wave of frigid air pushes through.

We're hearing all about the "arctic vortex" you're experiencing, and seeing pictures. A reporter did that trick of throwing a cupful of water in the air, where it instantly turned to ice. Having never personally experienced anything colder than minus 22 C, in Switzerland in calm conditions with no wind chill, I cannot for the literal life of me imagine what minus 50 C with 25 mph winds must be like. Going for an arctic expedition, I would imagine.

Very windy but at least it's stopped raining.

It's been wet and windy here today but nothing out of the ordinary. Probably helps being as far from the coast as it's possible to get in this country.

Thanks Petrushka. We've battened down the hatches here in RI. I can only imagine that it's even colder and windier in Chicago and send 'warm' wishes to richardfinegold in The Windy City! I'm making vats of soup with holiday leftovers as a way of keeping warm. Beef Barley Soup and the traditional post-Christmas Turkey Soup are bubbling away chez m. Now it's time to put away the Christmas ornaments and put the tree outside. We stand it in the garden and attach bits of bird food to it. I also trim off some of the branches so I can lay them over my fern garden.

Not sure if anyone is keeping up to date with Brummie Simon’s musing but as to the “polar vortex” he has quite a rant which includes “These are not record breaking temperatures (yet), and such a polar vortex is not unusual, unheard of, unprecedented, unparalleled etc.. Oh, and if you see an interview where someone says it's 'the worst in living memory', you can bet your frozen bottom dollar that 'living memory' is no longer than around 5-years! Sorry to get the soap-box out twice in one day, but why is it that such rubbish would not dare rear it's head in astronomy, yet meteorology seems fair game?
I don’t know enough about weather over there (marthe will) as to if the current low temps in the US are therefore normal or not but what I saw on the news today looks pretty severe.

And also, re the UK storms he says “As one expects, there are starting to be a few alarming 'claims' emerging about the high seas and flooding which has occurred in recent days around the west and south of the UK. Understandably people in those locations, some of whom have had homes flooded, are worried about whether this is a trend and if further flooding can be expected over the coming years.

Anyway, on topic, not rainy today, over 10°, quite windy, so a normal January day here.

Anna, yes, the combined wind and cold temps make for severe conditions but not abnormal ones. January is meant to be cold. Temps of mid-50s F in January are abnormally warm. I remember our first winters in Newport (1979, early 1980s) being quite frigid for days on end; so cold that the sea water of the bay froze in places. I couldn't possibly comment about weather patterns, global warming etc. I am concerned about all that and try to do my bit at the local level.
