It's been amazingly warm today - over 12° and the heavy rain that was forecast to sweep in has not materialised yet (Monday looks horrendous rainly still)

So this morning I went to the Big City (ok, I went to Hereford!) because I wanted to get some underwear for Christmas from M&S - mission accomplished - but imagine my reaction just now when a friend told me that M&S have 30% off everything online for today only!!

The quality of their clothing has gone badly downhill lately. Shirts end up with frayed collars after only a short time, socks don't last 5 minutes without ending up with holes, trouser zips are utterly useless (as I found out to my embarrassment only this week ). It's all stuff made in Egypt, Indonesia etc. Shoddy.

The zip is even going to go before long on my trusty Berghaus (not from M&S of course) and the hood isn't much good. For a garment costing £100 it's disappointing.

On topic, mild and windy but dry at the moment.

Mild here, but not wet and windy...yet. Petrushka, I agree about the quality of clothing made these days. It really has everything to do with manufacturers wanting to cut costs (even at the higher end) and far less to do with wage slaves making the stuff in far flung parts of the globe. A friend, who is in the rag trade (her ex-husband and she own a mill in Fall River, MA) told me that it's all about maximising profit by cutting corners. One example of this is using clear nylon thread instead of thread/cotton that matches the garment. This cuts down on time and motion because the spindles off thread can be used to stitch any colour of garment without having to be changed (taking up time and motion to do so.) I've bought dressy knit shirts for work from a mid/high-end retailer that have frayed within a very short period of time. The fabric is very thin and the stitching comes undone in no time. Rant over.

I got a new tB in March, and the zip does not work as it should. Disappointing, as you say.

OT, Weather here today cold (5º C) windy and rainy.

Yes, agree, I think 80% of their production now is outsourced. I bought a jumper online (turns out made in Cambodia) which was so dreadful I had to return it. However, I hope their underwear still has staying power - no matter what Jeremy Paxman says!!
My Berghaus zip has also failed - but it's years old - I just use the poppers to fasten, but I have a new 3-in-1 by Regatta

I have a trusty Berghaus jacket bought about 10 years ago that did several summer Alpine/Pyrenean trails, but my two walking companions both had bad experiences with more recently bought Berghaus jackets which, shall we say, resulted in correspondence with Berghaus. I daresay it's to do with where it's outsourced to. Should you be thinking of replacing, this is the make to go for.

At those prices? You must be joking. I got my new Regatta less than half price, plus a Peter Storm half-zip fleece really cheap (£9.60) from Millets - I fear they are going bust shortly ...

Just been flipping through the double issue RT - apart from Dr. Who & Sherlock it's pretty dismal for viewing - Thank the Lord for R3.

It's different if your life may depend on it - I'm talking 10,000 feet up in the Alps here.

OMG, has Pembrokeshire been suddenly elevated to Alpine status? Has Snowdonia been told about this? You know how we Welsh love to brag and compare the height of our mountains!

Indeed. I didn't lash out for RT but I looked at the (Glasgow) Herald's TV guide today. I shall watch the two programmes you mention, and that's about it.

The upside is that I'll get time to see my blurays of Broadchurch and read the new Rebus which have both been here since early in November.

It's all right, Anna. Richard has omitted to inform the forum of his change of tax exile.
