Max- 8.9 C - 1.1 C below normal
Min - 4.2 C - 0.2 C above normal
I only recorded frost on 2 nights - on the morning of the 20th it had dipped to Minus 2 C. I guess this is why there are still quite a few leaves on some of the trees, though they're falling fast at the slightest breeze.
PS - 3 months without a smoke, and I'm suffering from my worst cold in years!!! (Literally)
Well done S_A - three months is impressive. Are you taking gum or patches or is it just will-power?

I had a minor heart attack at the end of August which I was unaware of at the time, ams. Started getting chest pains, which turned out to be a partial heart valve blockage, but which immediately came to be associated with smoking, so I stopped there and then, went to the doc's, and was sent to Kings College Hospital where they kept me in a week for tests then fitted a stent under a local - amazing. I've been on a 4 drugs per day regime since then which plays havoc with my digestive system, but I get about 3 clear days a week, during which I get on with household chores, going out cycling and to evening jazz gigs etc. Luckily the digestive probs mean I haven't put on weight quitting this time - maybe by the time they're sorted, either by a change or me getting used to them, I'll be not missing the smokes, which were one reason for stopping eating at mealtimes! I hadn't intended mentioning this yet as it seemed a bit previous; I'm just hoping I don't turn into an anti-smoking fascist, like have so many people I know, including the last ones I would have expected.

You're clearly highly morivated S_A and with good reason - all power to your no smoking-elbow and keep up the good work
Keep up the great work S_A. It's not easy changing long established lifestyles, but you are showing us that it can be done.
Perhaps you would like to keep the rest of us up to date with your progress , as an encouragement to those of us who need to make changes !!
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
well done on the ciggies front S_A! be an anti smoking fascist, i am! if you can do 3 months - you can nix six, if six you can make a year and then two et seq .... but the habit never goes away
it feels colder than it is in the middle kingdom today
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Thanks to all for the encouragement!
Very damp, stagnant air sometimes feels cold and clammy, at others close and stifling. Never managed to get my head around that one...
s_a best wishes for kicking the habit. The HH did that many years ago using the cold turkey method and is thankful that he gave it uplong ago. Here in Newport, the weather is bright and cool...perfect weather as the tree guys take down the fallen tree this AM.
S_A, a few years ago my GP (and her husband) who were both heavy smokers gave up - of course she then couldn't resist pointing out her halo to all and sundry! The thing that spurred them on was a large sweet jar in which they put the money they would have spent daily. After a year it paid for a super deluxe skiing holiday - (of course, being a GP she didn't really need to save for a holiday but it does demonstrate how much money goes up in smoke)
Weather for the past few days here has been nondescript, not especially cold, just dry, cloudy and dull. Our Scottish posters look to be in for a touch of the white stuff on Thursday so had better dig out their snowshoes.
I have finalised my Christmas plans, I'll be away up North for the whole New Year week. I have no idea what strange customs they may have in Lancashire, it probably involves clogs and black peas!

I stopped smoking more than twenty years ago, and I don't feel any better off financially, though I'm certainly glad that I stopped. I certainly couldn't afford to smoke now. Best of luck to all who are trying. It can be done.
My shnowshoes and shovel are looked out. Anna, I think you'll find it's black pudding rather than black peas in Lancashire. It's black bun in Scotland at New Year (a dire concoction, IMHO!).
