Thanks Euda and glad you are still around.Only one problem, I couldn't kill a pigeon after feeding it with white breadcrumbs, I'd probably keep feeding it and let it go after giving it a warning about next time.
I eat meat but try not to think about how it gets to my plate. I need the protein but am a food coward.

The wood pigeon which fell out of the nest in front of my window on the street side keeps coming back looking hopeful...

        Morning all

Very cold but glorious sunshine at last :) Throw in a good weekend and things are definitely looking up.

You can always live on Marmite, saly! It works for me

I find I'm less and less happy about eating meat, especially the more one learns about farming and slaughtering practices. I may be going soft, but I'm just not sure it's right any more.

Mind you, Duchy Originals sausages will be the last thing to disappear from my fridge

Not Marmite Uncle Monty, I mustn't have all that salt, I think because of high BP.And Duchy originals? Pigs are pigs, royal or not.

Sal: well, that pigeon pie recipe looks good anyway; you could always ladle in chunks of chicken breast fresh from the plastic wrap. Curious, do they sell Cornish game hens in your markets? You can get them most anywhere in the US...they look (and taste) exactly like half-sized miniature roasting chickens.

I get so anaemic and run down if I try to eat a full-vegan diet--so for now salmon, egg, and whey protein seem to be the "least bad" options. When I do heavy strength-training, I get absolutely ravenous for protein, and can put it away like nobody's business! I'm in excellent health, so definitely shouldn't be complaining.

For what it's worth, here's a fascinating chart comparing different breeds of chicken:

Well, speaking as no spring chicken, like you, Euda, the only meat I eat is fish; yet at 65 I'm pretty good in health, and only today cycled all the way from here in S Dulwich to Notting Hill Gate, returning via the Albert Hall and stopping on Battersea Bridge to admire the now much-altered view west up the Thames that the Impressionists so loved. 28 miles in all in a single afternoon, celebrating the first preperly sunny day we've had here in literally ages.

Dunno where i get the energy from...

                  Good to have you back!

Where I live is known for two things: a famous Liberal election victory in the 1960s and a breed of chicken. For 10 points, name the place.

PS: and don't anyone dare mention rabbit stew :(

Orpington?? If so, didn't know it was famous for a breed of chicken!

Can I have a bonus point for Eric Lubbock?!

I lived in Sevenoaks for a while, and used to nip up to Orpington quite often -- the nearest Marks & Sparks. There was a good Chinese restaurant on the corner at the bottom of the High Street, iirc.

Indeed it is, the buff Orpington. A big, gentle bird, I'm told.

Yes, the restaurant is still there but the High Street is very tatty these days (partly because of a giant Tesco next to the war memorial). My kids are very disparaging about Orpington, and call it Chav Central. :(

Mahlerei, If you think Orpington High Street tatty you should see Sidcup High Street, close by. No M&S or similar store, no chicken connections. The only thing I can think of is that it was the home of that scary lady composer,Dame Ethel Smyth in the days whn it was a country town. Her house in the High Street became Fads, now a restaurant iirc. Her books are worth reading though, several volumes of autobiography.

.......and she was played on Breakfast recently to prove what a wide selection we get. Morning all - looks like being another fine day up here among the pit heaps!
