I was involved in it from 1977-2004 so I don't think so

"Emotionally blackmailed" is right. I was "emotionally blackmailed" recently by a relative on behalf of a young relative doing something sports related in aid of another young relative. Of course, these days it's all done online on a website set up for the purpose. I wouldn't mind so much if I got a personal acknowledgment. An automated "X thanks you for your donation" doesn't cut the mustard with me. Is a text or an email so hard?

Or am I just hopelessly old-fashioned and out of touch?

I'm not opposed to charitable fundraising, it's the way it's organised and how they marshall the routes and cyclists.

I get the distinct impression that boarders are suffering from compassion fatigue.

Perhaps they would do better to consider combatting the gagging bill? After all, there is a risk that good causes will be allowed to spend only pennies in the period before elections, and this is a restriction on the right to free speech IMO.

There is a good Utube video on this. I will try to find the link.

Look on the bright side - it could have happened in December. Anyway, it's a good excuse for a hot toddy.

... your dogs wear shoes and socks? - or are they not trained to 'fetch' their "favourite toy"??

Surely your status as Master among your dogs much diminished if you have to 'go seek' - for them! - their lost toys in the brook??

My day started in the Surgery at 8.15am - don't worry, it was just routine bloods! (cholesterol, etc)and I have no problem with fasting for 12 hours beforehand. What I do find difficult is not being able to have a mug of tea or a shot of caffeine first thing, so it was straight out of the surgery and into the coffee shop next door - where as an accompaniment to the coffee I had a Marlborough Bun (cannot recall ever having had one before but it was tasty, if rather dense)
Ontopic, yesterday was constant light rain in the morning, mist/cloud way down, not only covering hills but Church spire disappeared, gloomy and depressing, brightened by midday and reached 18° but rain clouds built around 7.30pm, some heavy spots, and then - a perfect arch of a rainbow. Lovely, haven't seen one for ages, it was right overhead of me, so far I have not located the crock of gold ...... Today, blue sky and sun all day, nicely warm, rain tomomorrow I think.
(completely offtopic, I see that Dundee Cake is applying for EU protected status! )

Indeed, not exactly White Fang is it....no V, the toy does not float and sank in 2 foot (or is it feet) of water , they can retrieve from 6-9" of water but not 24"....still leader of the pack [grun grun]....(we (I include myself )have had this toy for a year, very versatile weighed bone shaped thing )....

This seems to be happening more and more these days, to my knowledge, as landlords have the whip hand, just like they used to. So, bad luck, BBM. It was more than anything experience of landlords and ladies that turned me into a raving raging lefty in the 60s, and little that has taken place by way of amelioration in the interim has done anything to assuage those views - if anything, the contrary!

Very cool today, with the first of the expected rain falling earlier than predicted just now. Brummie Simon is now predicting cold northerly winds for Monday and Tuesday of next week, with snow likely over the Scottish highlands!

I hope your blood is OK, Anna. Dundee cake - yes that was in the news locally last week. A group of local bakers - and we have some very good ones - have made a joint application. I'm not too keen on Dundee cake as it has nuts all over it - just like Dundee, really. What, btw, is a Marlborough bun?

OT, dry sunny, 17ºC when I left work. Almost warmer out than it was in.
