I decided to do one of my long circular cycle rides this afternoon. Brixton, Clapham, Battersea Bridge, Fulham Broadway, Hammersmith, Barnes, Roehampton... everything went fine until I made my way across Putney Heath; on reaching the Merton Road, intending to return home via Earlsfield and Balham, my front tyre suddenly went flat, and wouldn't even be re-pressurised for doing short distances. Not having brought any repair gear with me, I would have to walk the 3 and a half miles to Wandsworth Common to catch a train to my nearest station, Gipsy Hill, assuming they'd let my bike onto the train (on a bank holiday), and from there a 10 minute walk home. There was no problem with taking the bike - Wandsworth Common was devoid of staff and they'd left the ticket barriers open. Unfortunately, however, no trains happen to be running on my line today , and so I alighted at Norbury, at 4 miles the shortest possible walk, and have just got in... absolutely parched but newly familiarised with parts of SW London I hadn't visited before. Thank heavens though for those cans of lager, plus the lemonade I'd stored in the fridge!

Well, at least you had an emergency repair kit in the fridge.

Superb day down here. We went to Buscot House near Lechlade. House with marvellous art collection and beautiful gardens + park for longish walking.

It seems colder today but perhaps it's justme. Windows are running with condensation, it's dull and autumnal.

Did anyone think the Seasons sped by, melding into each other? And the MBs seem the same,
little on the Proms but much political comment.

TV not checked today but, mangerton, don't know what needs replacing next, TV or ailing computer.

The first 45 single I ever owned - bought by my parents, because every time it was broadcast, I'd go behind my father's armchair and sing and dance along to it, pretending that the back was a microphone stand.


I was 47 at the time.

I wasn't really 47 - I was 4. Fast forward ten years and we went on a family holiday to Bournemouth. On the Wednesday afternoon, I went into the hotel TV room, to see the Hotel Owners' daughter, with her boyfriend. They were watching Little Big Time (a kids' TV series starring said Fred with his snoozy colleagues) and the boyfriend was in hysterics at the madcap antics on screen. He kept looking at me to see if I was equally impressed, but, at 14, such things were a opportunities to sneer only, which I duly did. Only later did my mother point out that the boyfriend was Mr Garrity himself - the idol of my infancy.

Well; that's my brush with fame - doesn't match Gamba's wonderful stories, but mine own.

That's a coincidence! I had an uncle, normally very straight-laced, you used to fall about laughing when at age 11 I imitated Shirley Bassey singing "Kiss Me Honey Honey Kiss Me":

He used to get me to repeat it over and over again, then sing it in front of my aunt, who tut-tutted in disgust, and his business associates! - something decidedly dodgy, now I come to think about it. I had no way of understanding the sexual innuendo - we were more innocent for our age in those days!

That's made me very happy, S_A back in the saddle and able to do long-distance rides again. Onwards and Upwards - but with plenty of bottles of water next time!

I'm afraid I can't compete with the last posts about possibly dodgy uncles and pretending to be Shirley Bassey (I was a very shy child and would prefer to hide behind the sofa rather than be the the centre of attention - nothing much has changed, always the shrinking violet!)

Comment? No, I just imagined the net curtains twitching violently as you pretended not to look - three times!

On topic, got very hot finally yesterday at just under 24°, I was out in the countryside, today around 22° but very heavy. I hope the dry spell will continue, need some more sunshine to ripen up tomatoes, still picking beans by the bushel.
