Progress report: So far no disasters, unlike Richard’s Flanders & Swann song. Christian and Kieran (the engineers, smartly dressed in their uniforms with no plumbers bums to be seen) arrived at 8am, said they would immediately drain the water system so I’d better the fill the kettle for a cup of tea and theirs was white with one sugar. They were appreciative of the biscuits and mid-morning complimented with on my excellent coffee. Christian is the eldest, very polite, good manners, Kieran is more of a Jack the Lad with a cheeky grin. Both have Newport accents you could cut with a knife.

I went to a neighbour for coffee to escape drilling sounds leaving R3 on (it was Shosta’s 11th to be followed by Haydn’s 25th) Was I being cruel? On my return Kieran apologised for changing over to R1 although Christian had begged him to persevere with classical music!!

The boiler is installed (as yet not connected so I have no hot water), lots more to do. They finished at 3.30, Kieran and an electrician will be here tomorrow at 8am, still possibly could run into Friday (Christian is off for a very long weekend fishing for carp in Oxford) As the kitchen was getting crowded I took myself off into town for lunch, which was very nice, probably do the same tomorrow. Also tomorrow electrics will be off for some while. (Why I spent so long scrubbing the kitchen I don't know as there is a faint film of brick dust everywhere even with the dustsheets they put down) So, rather draining emotionally (anticipating disasters) but so looking foward to the end result.

On topic, fine drizzle, tipped it down mid-afternoon, high of 18.8°

A happy issue to your labours, Anna.

Distressed that Shostakovich 11 gave way to some numpty DJ

Excellant news, Anna. I do find it rather it rather irritating when you have to go either to the garage to dump your car there, for whatever repair and tradesmen too for that matter, who change the channel!!

I retuned to what he had on - it was Absolute Radio. I shall try R3 again tomorrow with the electrician! Oh, what a cruel mistress I am of tradesmen!!

My lunch - I had a choice of where to go - but I decided on a rather new swishy fish and chip establishment (free WiFi!) which I hadn't tried. I had, freshly cooked to order, huge piece of cod in a lovely crisp batter with proper chunky chips which were truly fluffy in the middle (obviously not a patch on the Anstruther Fish Bar) Afterwards I really fancied a Mr. Whippy type soft ice cream cone .... alas, nowhere to purchase one! I might, as a celebration, go to the very expensive Italian bistro tomorrow ... or the cheaper Italian one.

This made me laugh. After I returned, I was sitting reading the local paper. Christian entered saying 'Excuse me, I must replace your thermostatic valve, and may I say I really like that picture' Ooh, thinks I, he likes the Ken Done. However, he went on to say he was 'quite surprised to see such a nice picture involving 'ladies' bits' and he was taken with it. The picture in queston is by Charles-August Mengin of Sappho! I have two Ken Done pics, no-one except me seems to like them.

No, No, 8obs, that came out wrong. By 'tradesman' I meant a skilled worker, one who has learnt their trade, I was employing the old fashioned term, not denigrating a gas fitter! Goodness, have I come over all a bit Downton Abbeyish and Lady of the Manor? I do hope not.

Well, I have now read the booklet to the boiler. I understand it not except the Eco Setting whereby it don't work unless it's entirely b$*&dy necessary! That suits me, I never had the old thermostat set above 15 degrees.

Have Sappho and Mr Whippy ever appeared in juxtaposed paragraphs anywhere before?!

I suspect not... It had to be you, Anna!

I trust I was not indirectly responsible for your 'soft ice cream cone' craving (hint: don't go looking for one on a Sunday morning in Pevensey Bay! )

"Is that a new thermostatic valve in your pocket, Christian, or are you just enjoying my artworks?" ...

                  OT: raining here

                        Well, back on topic. :)

Certainly nights drawing in, summer is coming to a close, with all this going on. It's all becoming much cooler, or are we in for an Indian Summer?

Do you concur that tomorrow morning (I have an early start) it looks as if I'll have to leave the bike at home or turn up at a meeting rather wet?

How are you, by the way? Have you set foot to pedal again lately?

The former, as tomorrow looks likely to be very wet until mid-afternoon in these parts; I think the tube would be the best bet!

A lot better thanks, Cali, no problems with cycling though tired much of the time; and the drugs seem to play havoc with the ol' digestive system: one has to explain to people commenting on my bruised arms that it's all down to aspirin, not becoming a junkie... or rather, becoming an aspirin junkie now I suppose....
