Not yet saly, boiler and bits will be delivered Tuesday morning, gasmen arrive Wednesday. Hopefully it'll just take two, rather than three, days. It's going to take longer than when you had yours replaced as it's to be situated in a different room and all pipes have to be diverted/removed/replaced hence floorboards having to come up. This afternoon is garden chainsaw work, felling a troublesome stump and cutting down some rampant conifers at the far end (why on earth the previous people planted them I do not know)

And the tabloids complained about "trade union militancy" - look what happens now the towel's been thrown in!

          Yes, exactly, SA.

Anna, yes her hours may be affected and each day we loose money, which is a problem in itself.

Then I sincerely hope that in time Mrs. BBM will find a job with a contract of employment so she can take paid sick leave, it’s really not right to have to struggle back to work after being hospitalised. Meanwhile you of course will take over all household duties so she can put her feet up in the evening!

Yesterday eventually turned sunny and warmish at over 20° and today dawned with blue skies but has turned into sunny spells, not much over 19° with quite a cool breeze, still no sign of rain in the foreseeable future here.

A question for ornithologists. Yesterday afternoon nine geese flew overhead in south-easterly direction honking loudly, but more of less in a line rather than a V formation. Never seen geese flying here before (have seen flying ducks and twice swans due to being near the river), would they be migrating early or just out for a Saturday afternoon excursion? No idea of what breed they were.

(Yesterday was quite exhausting – and I wasn’t the one climbing trees and dangling from a rope! I now have a large gap in the hedge where two large ivy covered oak tree stumps were so I want to put up some quick-fix fencing, I was thinking of those bamboo or brushwood fences on a roll – anyone got them? No point in attempting to plant anything until the Autumn. However, I have now regained my view with the drastic pruning and shaping of row of conifers)

Anna, most likely feral (i.e. living here all the time, as opposed to migratory) greylags or Canada geese. You should be able to check out the call via these links. It'll be another 2 months before wild geese start to arrive for the winter. I had a sensational day at Slimbridge last winter, looking at whitefronts, Brents, Canadas, greylags and a couple of tundra bean geese . There is a special magic about the call of wild geese.

It appears that those of us in central and southern England should look skywards after dark tonight and early tomorrow morning for a rather impressive display of meteor showers (aka Perseids) from the debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle.

Forecasters say central and southern England can expect an unusually good view of the debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle

It's not going to be this good again until 2025, they say

Lots of inner city/next-to-the-railtrack light pollution around here Bbm, but praps I'll take a wander

Thanks Richard, from the audio they were definitely Canada Geese with their distinctive honking. I spent a very happy day at Slimbridge a few years ago, it's a good day out.

I noted the Perseid shower because it was flagged up very early on R3. the Guardian article says the Beacons would be best for viewing but a good show should also be seen in East Wales but I thought the best time was early hours just before dawn? Not sure if cloud cover will allow, it's patchy at the moment and in fact it's been rather a chilly day with temps not much above 17°

We have occasional Canada Geese here, honking and flying roughly from East to West in a straight line.

There are several large old estates near here, now museums or suchlike and with large lakes, but I have never seen the geese, except flying past.

I too have happy memories of Slimbridge. Peter Scott was still running it in those days- 50s- 1960s I think.

I knew the Perseids are showering at their peak tonight, and I've been looking hopefully at the sky all day, but all I can see is cloud. I'm not optimistic. Pity, because it's an impressive sight.
