I've got a dental appt tomorrow morning. Normally a 20 minute walk, but with predictions of 92 degrees I feel tired already. Not far enough for a taxi but not looking forward to the walk. Just a check-up hopefully and they charge £10 if one misses an appointment.

    Keep cool everyone

Haven't had a severe thunderstorm here for a long time, several years I should think. Best one I ever saw was Moscow in 1982 and was a real spectacle. Torrential rain when I was in Bahrain in 2012 completely dried up inside 10 minutes due to the heat.

The cloud here hasn't cleared despite forecast that it would and there is still a stiff breeze.

Another scorcher here too. 28C(I think). Thunderstorms are forecasted for this week, with localised flooding as well, what with the ground being bone dry. Again, weather being one way or another!

        Saly, I would'nt take a taxi. I just wouldn't chance it tomorrow.

Hello marthe, I can't use my emails much at the moment but hope all is well with HH,you

and everyone else that side of the pond.

          regards, saly
Saly et al, today has been a bit of a relief from the close, muggy, and humid weather we've been having of late. I do appreciate the etymology of this weather-related terminology but all three have been apt over here. The Weather Channel is showing more of the same rolling cross the continental US for the near future. This probably means more "close, muggy, humid" weather for all of you. At any rate, as long as Mercury is no longer in retrograde (I think), crises will be averted over here. I'm not "into" astrology, but the whole Mercury retrograde thing could explain all the mishaps that have occured chez m this past month. I'm looking forward to lunch with two English friends on Tuesday and shall bring a nice jar of homemade blueberry jam as a hostess gift. Blueberry jam was made by the HH who is very clever at jam making. One bonus of the close, muggy, humid weather has been a bumper crop of edible mushrooms growing in our front lawn...Boletus edulis mmm!

Saly, best wishes for your visit to the dentist!

Woke up to thunder directly overhead at 06:40. It continued like a James Blades exhibition for about 20 minutes and then rolled away. We've had some rain too by the look of it & the air feels deliciously cool & fresh. What a splendid summer this has been thus far.

Good luck with the great trek to the dentist & back, salymap

Great to see you back after all your travails, marthe. I don't know about Mercury retrograde but I like the sound of HH's blueberry jam with warm scones and butter ... oh dear I'm getting carried away . Please don't tell the diabetes nurse

Going to be another scorcher today! And at the time of writing, a Royal birth is imminent! not from the Royal House of Plantagenet(just in case people may be wondering! :)), the Royal House of Windsor! :)

As people have been kind [it was just a check-up], thought I'd say I'd cancelled the dentist until I feel like making another appt.

Nice breeze here atm- perhaps weather people got it wrong ?

Royal doings all around...an imminent birth, a new King of the Belgians. That Plantagent stuff is complicated. I've been reading (as well as watching) The White Queen and it still clear as mud. The dearth of given names complicates matters when the major players are either Elizabeth, Margaret, or Anne for the girls and Edward, William, Richard, and Henry for the boys. Isabelle and Jacquetta really stand out in this line-up. Wonder what the new Windsor will be named?

If the baby is a girl, one of the names will be Diana.

Just been into the garden in rural central Southern England to take a reading: 29C. A temperature comparable to that to be had in the Med at this time of the year but strangely it does not feel as hot. There is no sensation of the sun burning as it does further south. I think this can only be put down to the strength of the sun which is considerably weaker in these northern latitudes.

I'll be interested in seeing what max temp S_A recorded in SE London. We had reports of what it was at Heathrow, but that's always going to be mega seeing as it's just acres of concrete.

Not our hottest day here, peaked at 29.4°, cloud didn't clear until midday, at around 3.30pm it was extremely uncomfortable venturing outside, really muggy in that an instant film of perspiration formed on forehead and neck (sorry to be so indelicate!) It's still 23° with no breeze so a sticky night lies ahead. Latest for tomorrow here is very heavy rain for some hours but no thunderstorms.

As to marthe's Retrograde Mercury, a google shows that it is a widely held belief, makes for interesting reading. Assuming the clouds don't roll across it'll be a lovely full moon to sit out and gaze upon later

                            It's a boy, Spencer ? (33/1 with William Hill).

                            Very warm in Manchester today.

It reached just over 30 C here, Anna - at 250 feet above sea level, and on the north side of the Crystal Palace ridge (367 feet at its highest point), we're lucky to be above London's heat centres: 33 C in the centre of Town, absolute hell travelling by Underground I'm told, and just over 34 C at Heathrow - all those concrete surfaces, I'd imagine! By keeping my front door and windows firmly shut and the hot water bioiler switched off for 2 days I've managed to keep my inside temperatures down to 21 C. It's still 25 outside.

My guess is you will get some storms, Anna, if they haven't cropped up as yet. Contrary to Sir Velo's opinion, I thought the sun felt really hot this afternoon - as did the Italians next door, who said they hadn't experience heat like that of Naples since first arriving here 3 years ago.

Cool* and cloudy all day here today. Sun not in evidence at all.

*damn cold actually if you sit under an ac vent; I'd to put on a jersey.
