Oh, I hadn't seen that thread - no doubt your manservant will be picking up the picnic hamper from Fortnums? (knowing your tastes I expect you have ordered lashings of pork pies and scotch eggs as well as the smoked salmon and Bolly?) The late, lamented, rubbernecker of This Parish always used to tip up at Glyndebourne (I think on Corporate Jollies) - if you see him please pass on my regards.

He will be in our party tomorrow I've tried to tempt him back here - I was rather brutally rebuffed only this week

However I shall pass on your regards, of course!

My intuition told me he probably would be providing the hospitality! Well please say that I might finally take him up on his invitation to join him in Crick on a Monday night! Assuming he's still willing to take me on of course.

              Noted!

Actually others in the group are deft at asparagus- and strawberry-related preparations and are taking the lead, but there will be rubbernecker nosebag of some description.

Caliban is sommelier for the day

I would expect nothing else but the finest wines from your cellar - best not let vinteuil know which vintages, he may cast aspertions (as he is wont)
Hope you have a lovely, lovely, day.

Very close geographically vints, just up the road from Betjeman's old place

A very nice winebar, it was the 'office canteen' of my first lawfirm. I learnt all about Cloudy Bay Sauvignon there

Presumably Betjeman's flat is still there, above the premises?

Apparently you used to be able to hire it & stay there

We were a couple of streets away from Cloth Fair... you may be relieved to learn...

EDIT re wines, nothing complicated - everyone's clamoured for bubbles so that's it really. I'm not that keen on more than one glass of champagne, so I confess I'm taking a bottle of Highland Park single malt too - I'd rather quench my thirst with sparkling water and knock back the odd dram or four and anticipate that others will want to as well, whether as apéritif or digestif...
