... o you know, for us down here, anywhere north of the Watford Gap - ectually anywhere north of Wigmore Street - is The North, all pretty undistinguishable what with their whippets, flat caps, brass bands, mushy peas, and other stereotypical indulgences...

And I suppose anywhere west of Hammersmith Broadway is THE WEST, all pretty indisginguishable what with their homespun smocks, scrumpy cider and straw in their hair, or forwever munching pasties and cream teas (not to mention dressing up as Druids and speaking an incomprehensive language .....)

Very warm here, just over 22°, zero breeze, so just about perfect. Long may it continue (as least for a couple of days) otherwise it won't be Flaming June it'll be Flamin' Nora we'll be saying!!

No, no, no, Anna! The homespun smocks and straw in the hair apply mainly to Dorset, Devon and Somerset, the scrumpy cider to Somerset and (to a lesser extent) Devon, the pasty(sp.) munching is largely Cornwall, the cream teas are mainly Devon and Cornwall, the dressing up as Druids is principally confined to the Stonehenge area and Longleat and that language - incomprehensible rather than incomprehensive belongs almost exclusively to the country from which the Ladies of Powys originate, since Cornish is hardly spoken any longer!

Anyway, I'm not so sure about this Watford gap business; I thought that, these days, any land east of a curved line drawn more or less from Portsmouth via Reading, Luton and Ipswich to the east cost is Lunnon, innit?...

All that said, I'm only a Scotsman, so what would I know of such things really?!

OK, so there's a midwife in the sewer called Beth but the rest I simply don't get. Shouldn't there be a separate section of the forum for those who wish to exchanges posts in Welsh, just like all those dual signs of which one sees far to many in Wales itself and the various government department websites that try to direct people to particular pages if they want to read material in Welsh?

I have heard that the Welsh language, though clearly not incomprehensible otherwise no Welsh would be able to speak and read it, is as difficult as it is to learn as a foreign language for the purpose of making it as discouraging as possible to any English who would try to learn it, though how true that may be I do not know.

Caliban merely said: "I am not sure what you are talking about" He was just trying to impress by appearing to have suddenly gained a grasp of the Welsh language! I suspect the unexpected sun has gone to his head ... and it is Friday after all, a time for frivolity.
As for your remark about only finding Druids at Stonehenge - have you never been to an Eisteddfod?

No, but point well taken, of course!

By the way, I was in a restaurant a few days ago and the fish of the day, I was told, sounded like "suin" which the chef-proprietaire fortunately told me is Welsh for sea trout. I had it and it was delicious but I did point out that I'd not expected to hear a Frenchman in Herefordistan speaking Welsh! I thought that it was a little careless and indiscreet, anyway, since there was a part of of lawyers on the next table...

Oh, very nice - I bet you had the Duck Magret!! And possibly the foie-gras?
A life in Chancery is all beer & skittles isn't it? One merry round of wining and dining .... squandering away the inheritences of the poor widows and orphans ....
