Pouring rain here. So much for the forecasters' "rain later in the day". It's not 10 o'clock yet.

oh well you might not wish to know that the sun is shining in a bright blue sky in the middle kingdom mangerton, but it is ....
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Not too good here, 10° but feeling about 2 degrees cooler in the wind, grey and cloudy, we are now promised our rain will start around lunchtime and then becoming heavy for the rest of the day and night. I think London and the SE will be spared any rain and should continue dry and sunny until the early hours of tomorrow, so make the most of it saly, BBM and S_A. I should continue with the gardening and get the sacks out ready for collection (I was so tired yesterday after bramble wrestling, plus I'd been up since first light, I slept for 9 hours solid!)
BBM, visiting my brother just outside of Brighton I always made a point of having a day there and fish and chips (usually at the chippy just to the right of the pier on the seafront - the one that has the psychotic seagulls waiting to pounce!)

(I used to live in Hove, only for 3 years - off Western Road, opposite Palmeira Square, so I know Brighton well)

I thought I'd got away with no pesky ants this year, but not. One running round the long unit in
a sunny position - quickly despatched. He was the 'seeker' ant, he would fetch his friends if he found even a crumb. I HATE ants
Ants are a real problem here too. We use Ant Stop! Bait Station available from Wilkinsons and find it very effective. It's not powder or spray but a round shaped container about the size of a small shoe polish tin (so handy if you have pets or children) which a single ant will enter then take the poison back to the nest, hopefully destroying the lot. Trust me, it works.

One summer, many years ago, I returned from out in the garden on a hot August Sunday to find our living room window literally black with thousands of flying ants! It was one for the Hoover to clear up! Never seen it before or since.

Thanks,Pet, I'll get family to buy some of that for me. I sprinkle talcum powder round the back door, as good as some ant powders. Garden comes right up to the house but haven't seen many ants so far this year.

Some years ago relatives brought me home after a visit to them and on putting the kitchen light on said "don't look!" The table was covered with ants, a grain or two of sugar will surfice Ugh.

I presume it's raining now, in that case. It's still raining here, so at least it's consistent.

I've never met a psychotic seagull, but there was a kleptomaniac seagull in Aberdeen a few years ago.

After the rain...comes the sun. Sunny but brisk today. As I look through my office window, I see the HH out in the garden armed with loppers and a pruning saw. I'll have to go and have look. Memorial Day today when we remember veterans present and past.

Same as here marthe: at 16 C with a moderate to fresh breeze not quite warm enough to lie out in the sunshine, but just right for a woodland walk just undertaken.

So, I been wondering, why in the US, they have their Memorial Day today?

Wikipedia: it seems to date from after the Civil War. Is this right, marthe?
