Anything to remove any nasty corrupting socialist connotations eh?

Well ........ they didn't say that in so many words ...... It was put forward by the Tourism thinktank that a UK Day in October would bring tourists flocking to the UK (although they did think about tying it in to the Battle of Trafalgar anniversary and calling it Trafalgar Day)
Another half-baked scheme was to scrap it in favour of a bank holiday in England on St. George's Day and in Wales on St. David's Day. But if this mean sticking to the actual dates it couldn't work (two years ago St. George's Day fell on Easter Saturday, also, how can you have different bank holidays either side of the Severn Bridge?) So then they thought, aha! A move from the May bank holiday to a St Piran's Day bank holiday in Cornwall, on 5 March, would benefit the Cornish economy by £20-35 million from tourists. Not wishing to upset any of our Cornish posters but how many people have actually heard of St. Piran?
Personally I'd love a bank holiday at the end of October rather than the cluster we have in April and May but weatherwise it probably wouldn't be a good idea for encouraging people to get out and about. I would like Whit Monday to be restored to its proper date.

Actually, Anna, October temperatures are often higher than those of April and May, so, for me at any rate, it would be a welcome break from the protracted "fall" from the late August to Xmas Bank Hols. The one I'd shift would be the Whit BH: why, I wonder, do we celebrate it (he asked in utter ignorance)?

I think we should stop calling them Bank Holidays , the less we have to think about those rogue institutions the better.

I'd be quite happy with Public Holidays ... and more of them, as they do in Malta (over 30 at the last count )

Because Whitsun marks Pentecost- the birth of the Christian Church. It's the seventh Sunday after Easter, which commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Christ's disciples (Acts of the Apostles chapter 2) when they were told to go out and begin preaching.
It seems Whitsuntide was one of the three holidays allowed to medieval villeins.
(I confess I did look that up, although I knew it was called Pentecost)

Some of us were talking about the several countries in the EU where small migrating birs are used as target practice BBM and it's permitted because it's traditional. some insensitive oik (ok it was I ) insisted that Malta was one of these and poor Mario took exception to this and resigned.

The truly sad thing was that he posted a link to show how Malta was getting its act together in this respect, but he still resigned.

(I again tried and failed to connect with Brucksnore earlier this week. I'll probably give it another go in 2014. A sort of annual pilgrimage, then, going a millimetre up the Bruckner mountain, then quickly back down again.)
