Isle of Whitehorn EhMangerton....spent a really lovely week parked up in my van there 2 years ago....it's not that big a place, do you know the Farr's....

no... can't say i've run into them so far. As you say, it's a lovely part of the country.

Very chilly in the Pennines today, but with a lot of very cheering sunshine which has melted most of the snow away. Clear skies all day, too: I was getting quite hopeful that I might get out and see this comet tonight. Guess what?! Complete cloud cover as soon as the sun set!

Very sudden snow and hailstorm just now brought the temperature down from 5 C to 1.5 C in one minute , and screams aplenty from secondary schookids waiting at the stop for buses to take them home. I had expected this when all view to the north, London Eye and beyond, disappeared behind a dramatic grey curtain. Anyone else experiencing weather like this?

(BTW all those kids just had the uniforms their parents must have sent them out in in this morning's frost - none was wearing or even carrying overcoats or macs. We must have had a big influx of mostly black and Asian families from Newcastle of late. )

Very cold down here in West Sussex today, Just nhad a snow flurry that's all today. Thank goodness but the majority of the time had sunny intervals, which is rather nice!! :)

I had thought we were due for a deluge of something as from being *6.9° at just after 2pm the sky got ominously black and the temp fell to 4° by 3pm, now it's slowly climbing back up and black clouds replaced by pale grey. Overall it's been the nicest day of the week as no wind and until the above, blue sky and sun. No comet watching last night as unfortunately it clouded over at sunset and by the look of it no comet watching this evening (shame as I think it's at its closest today?)

I had thought we were due for a deluge of something as from being *6.9° at just after 2pm the sky got ominously black and the temp fell to 4° by 3pm, now it's slowly climbing back up and black clouds replaced by pale grey. Brummie Simon of Weatherweb says tonight should be a good night for comet viewers - especially the further west and north you are, so all being as anticipated you should get a good viewing, Anna - sunset being the best time. Look through binoculars to the horizon, just left (I think he said) of the crescent moon.

A few years ago, I remember sitting out on the astroturfed piazza area outside The National among crowds of sunworshippers listening to jazz coming from a temporarily set up stage. Suddenly it started to rain heavily, catching most of us (meself included!) unawares; and with the covered area surrounding the building already cram full of people sheltering, there was general mild panic. Within literally seconds, staff emerged bearing pink plastic see-thru capes, and within no time the precinct was a mass of huddled figures resembling computer imaged foetuses! The Arts Council must have had resources on hand for occasions such as this; at any rate the South Bank's reputation must have mushroomed among tourists, who would most certainly have taken this story home with them. Admittedly the capes were not exactly designed for robust handling, but with gentle treatment, mine has proved invaluable in instances when I've been caught out on my bike, folding up small enough as it does to fit snugly into my back pack of indispensibles for any eventuality.

At the moment, still scattered cloud cover, sunset is around 6.15pm so I'll cross fingers.
And, I have taken a note that if ever I find myself in leafy Dulwich and are passed by someone on a bicycle dressed in an Arts Council pink plastic cape - well, I don't know what I'd do!!

Enough in that heavy shower for a thin covering of snow everywhere here. Even I wasn't expecting that much! At least the council gritted around here. That should be it for now not much in the way of convection visible to the north, though another batch could roll up later in the evening. At least the wind, such a feature of late, has dropped off completely now.

No cometising for me tonight either. Headed east this morning and after a very sunny start, the easter I got the more cloud I saw. Heavy hail shower around 5 pm. I've stopped for the night in the borders; home tomorrow.
