woken to a "light dusting" of snow on the Sussex coast. when was the last time we had snow in March in southern England ? someone's going to say last year, but I don't think it was.
Just checking, March last year was far too mild for any snow down here in the south. My records reveal that the last time we had snow in March was on the 24th March 2008, brought on a strong northerly airstream. Snow had fallen on the two preceding days too; temperatures in London dipped to - 4 C on the night of the 23rd/24th, so I guess that might have been a record-breaker elsewhere in the UK. . More heavy snow fell on the following April 6th; two days earlier temperatures had reached 17 C!
This morning was blue skies and sunshine, it's now clouded over and small flakes are coming down fast and furious and virtually a white-out. The NE wind is gusting at 31mph and is viciously cold. The weather station reports current temperature is 1.0 but windchill is -4.7 Not a day for cyclists nor for hanging around out of doors!
well it was, but it hasn't stopped all day 'accumulation' is the word I think
Here in central London there were powdery flakes falling and swirling around in the wind this morning, but hardly any now and it has remained quite dry and the snow just disappeared. Perishing cold though...

Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

No accumulations here (have you photos?), just flakey on and off (that's the weather - not me!) Wind has calmed down and local station reports that it is -0.3 and windchill -6.6 and dropping rapidly so tonight will be nothing more than another veggie pasta meal with garlic bread and the second episode of Broadchurch (I caught up with first episode and was quite gripped) whilst snuggled on the sofa and we shall see what the morrow brings re frost and ice. Caliban, the faster you cycle home the warmer you will be!

Managed to get away with not going anywhere today - stayed at home!

Caliban's homeward journey goes west, iirc, so that will be to his advantage! Mercia is located nearer the "epicentre" of the weather systems that's giving the Channel Islands a real blizzard, thus explaining her report. Here we now seem to be under the cloud sheet associated with that system, and this has suppressed shower cloud development. How much closer that frontal system advances is very much touch-and-go, and on that hangs the prospect of any further snow in the London area, tonight and tomorrow morning. Temperatures here haven't got above minus 1 C all day, making it the second coldest day of the winter (so far!), and coldest March day that I can remember since 1958!

Quite correct... The week before last, and I suspect again from tomorrow, the ride to work directly into the wind is horrible, the ride home speedy and seems about 10º warmer!

Well, I got here without any undue trouble. Sorry to hear about all the snow and cold elsewhere, especially Jersey. I passed through a few very light flurries, but that apart it's been bright sunshine. There was a beautiful sunset, and the skies are clear, so I'm hopeful of seeing some stars and possibly L4 Pan-Starrs later.
The only drawback is the temperature. The warmest it's been today is 1 deg C, so it'll be damn cold tonight!
