Nurse m. has been peeling grapes and making cups of tea, offering sympathy etc. for the past week. HH will be returning to work tomorrow but will now need to watch his diet very carefully. Alas, Hartley's Pork Pies, Bangers and Mash and other salt-laden goodies are on the proscribed list. Thank goodness for online viewing of rugby and footie to while away the time spent in recovery.
Great News, marthe, proscribed pork products aside - my very best wishes to you both!

Shriek!! Oh, the Horror! But, that is not as bad as the sin of men wearing socks with sandals!!
Seriously marthe, glad you have Husband home now and I think a salutory warning to those males on this MB who are addicted to pork pies (did anyone see the latest health scare about eating processed meat ....?) Well, I did and so today I had a bacon sandwich, BUT, I am having vegetarian pasta for dinner which cancels my transgression out.
On-topic, it's been bitter, grey and dull, I put the recycling out and thought my legs might fall off with the coldness of the wind blowing up my trousers.
P.S, As to Mother's Day lunches, my friend has told me her 10 year old son cooked her, and her ma-in-law, pan fried salmon with Asiatic noodles with absolutely no supervision before he and his dad went off to watch Liverpool play a match. That boy will go far! In which direction I don't know ....

It has snowed in the Pennines, today: twice! Both times the flurries were so light that it looked as if it was falling upwards. In between, a very welcome hour of sunshine. Bitterly cold all day, however, and with very strong winds since teatime (cue more comments about pork pie consumption).

sounds an absolute poppet, she should be proud of him

Re that research, it flew past me but did I see that if you ate only one slice of bacon/day or less your chances of developing cancer were reduced by ... 3.3%

So you could save up and have two rashers and two sausages for a weekend breakfast and still reduce your cancer-risk by 3.3%

That's the sort of research I can see the value of ... pass the ketchup, Alice

And Sauce Hollandaise added a must. Or does that go just with poached? Anyway, making it is very good exercise in this cold weather - all that whipping! - the problem, from memory, being the extra salt produced, which showers its way into the mix.

It's been snowing on and off here all day today, and there have been 2" or so since I got back at 4.30. Temp here is currently
                    -2°C.

Because it's a Sunday evening, it's fairly quiet and there hasn't been a gritter to be seen. Some cars have been failing to get up the hill opposite and have been sliding ignominiously down again. The gritters will be out in the early hours, so all should be well tomorrow.

                    I hope. It's 180 miles to where I'm going.

Just a few specs of "soft hail" here this afternoon. It's called soft hail, but it doesn't feel partcularly soft when cycling against the wind! So far the wind hasn't got up as I was expecting, but apparently tomorrow is going to be the real shocker, especially down here, with gales and subzero temps. I made sure my food supplies are adequate!

Thank you all for good wishes. HH is on the road to recovery. Anna, sandals with socks!! I'm falling about laughing. Sandals with socks are a sure sign that one is not from here. The preferred summer footwear in Newport is the flip-flop or the topsider (a boat shoe.) Waitstaff in local restaurants prefer Dansko clogs. Sounds as if some of you are having our nasty weather of a few days ago. Rest assured that the sun will be shining soon.

woken to a "light dusting" of snow on the Sussex coast. when was the last time we had snow in March in southern England ? someone's going to say last year, but I don't think it was.

The first few flakes of snow drifting down here in NW2

There's certainly been a huge surge of garden activity recently - birds aplenty at the seed-feeders and fatballs and lots of gathering of nest materials - one of the benefits of keeping an untidy garden

Practically a white-out here at the mo. So much for... "occasional light snow flurries"
