    When I was a child we always had a joint of meat on Sunday, cold on Monday. And home made trifle with tinned fruit, sponge cake at the bottom, and jelly. But served with fresh cream. I can't be bothered now, a pot of yoghurt does for me.

    And I had to wait until everyone was finished and say 'Please may I get down'. Kids wouldn't do that now I'm sure

      Your fare sounds exactly the same as ours was. I used to hate the Monday cold, and I still dislike cold meat, except ham, perhaps partly from childhood association with dreary Mondays. I agree that Sunday Lunch ought to be at, er, lunchtime, but the trouble is that if you like a glass of wine or three, you’re done for for the rest of the day. Maybe it’s just age speaking there, though …It was never a problem for my parents, because we always had tap-water.

          Trifle, now. Haven't made for one for years. For only one or two, I'd be eating it for a week! I'm interested to see that yours had jelly as I know opinion is divided on this point. Mine didn't, following in mother's footsteps, I suppose. I took care to add plenty of sherry and custard, though.

          My younger sister and I always had to ask to leave the table.

                Still can't abide cold fat of any kind - cold lamb is often nasty

                But a nice lean cold cut of beef with horseradish: now that's a treat!!

                  Reminds me of a daft joke of my father’s, maybe from RAF days. Somebody was calling them ’pissoles’ (presumably a comment on the quality) and some fastidious soul said ‘No, it’s an R, not a P’. Reply: ‘All right, then, arseholes’.

                      On Mondays Mother would often make stovies (a great Scottish dish) and add leftover cold meat.

                      Agreed, about the beef....and the fat!

                                Sunny but cool here in Newport, RI. Snow is gone and the ground quite bare. Soon it will be time to do a bit of winter pruning, leg permitting. The city doesn't pick up any yard waste this month so there will be a nice pile for them to collect in late March. I think our Sunday roast will be chicken not beef, lamb, or pork. G. will do the honors as roast meats are his speciality. I'm not a big fan of cold meat on Monday, though we do find creative ways of using up the leftovers through the week. I hope members of the board are well and not coming down with 'flu, cold, assorted other illnesses. Saly, we too, had to ask permission to leave the table. My children also went through the whole drill of asking, "please, may I be excused." I read a recent article in the NY Times about parents who send their children to "ettiquette coaches" to learn the basic table manners that were part and parcel of my childhood. it seems the parents of these children never learned proper manners in the first place and are anxious that their offspring know how to conduct themselves when they go out to good restaurants.
