I am planning to market a Magic Bird Bath, £10, aka a washing up bowl. you see, when it has ice on it it shows the weather is below freezing.

I am planning to market a Magic Bird Bath, £10, aka a washing up bowl. you see, when it has ice on it it shows the weather is below freezing.

Put me down for two, please, saly - one for home and one for work. At a tenner each they're much cheaper than the weather stones.

It's been snowing all day here, though not particularly heavily. I cleared my car when I left work and got home about 2.30. There's now about two inches of snow on it.

Very heavy snow here since about 20.00 and still coming down now. It's forecast to turn to rain tomorrow si it looks like an interesting trip to the shops in the morning.

The snow has returned to the Pennines, too. It all looks lovely - a really deep blanket, and the low sun is creating lots of colours on it (oranges, pinks - and blue shadows) - but I'm glad I don't have to go out 'til later.

In this bit of the Pennines I was amazed to see 9" on the branches of trees and walls last night 0100hrs, this morning all thatis dripping away....fields still blanketed....the lane inpassable....

There must have been around 10'' here last night but it is now rapidly melting in the sunshine.

Disappointed that I forgot to record the BBC2 broadcast last Saturday on the 1963 winter but watched it on the i-player last night. I was 8 at the time and can sort of remember it but the programme was a real eye-opener and fascinating stuff. Hope someone's posted it on youTube.

Out of the freeze, into the breeze

Short respite today, but now the cold spell is over we're back to more "normal" January conditions, with Tusday and Wednesday being not only hold onto your hat weather, but grab the nearest railing/bus stop/street light/belisha beacon/overweight slow-moving OAP, right up and down the countree.

Not sure which I prefer. At least with SW gales you're favoured if you just need to keep on going NE!

Thanks for forecast S_A. It's not the gales that bother me but the amount of rain forecast. It was torrential all yesterday evening and the river, which was low, has already risen to a worryingly high level. This morning's sun and blue sky was deceptive as the wind had a very chilling edge to it, as it does now. It's about 7° now but you can take another 2 degrees off that for windchill I think. Met a couple of people today who live in remote outlying areas and this has been their first trip to town for supermarket shopping since the snow fell
Edit: I am now cooking a totally delish dinner and am so glad the snow has gone!

It's been a lovely day on this side of the country today - an almost springlike 9 degrees C as I took my first substantial (4 mile!) Sunday walk of the new year this afternoon. Kite flyers aplenty in the parks taking advantage of the Force 5.

PS - all the snow now gone.

Yesterday a.m. fresh wall-to-wall snow, today. all gone - not a shred / flake / trace of snow ANYWHERE for miles and miles!

Rubbish collection tomorrow and already I have a fine collection of lids, bags of somethng or other [ugh] and a rather nice plastic bucket. The wind must be sending them all to me, and there they will stay as far as I'm concerned.

Anna a question-Do you cook these delicious meals just for yourself or do the neighbours join you ? Just wondered
