I've just watched the programme about the 1963 Winter. I was really surprised because I'd assumed 1947 was the worst in the 20th century. When I next see my elderly friend who remembers 1947 I must ask him how his experiences differed between the two. How would we cope today with such an event? Extremely badly I should think seeing the chaos that ensues after around a mere 10cm of snow.
Such a dark gloomy morning, needed a light on to read but it's slowly brightened since lunch and sky to the North is quite clear and pale blue whilst the sun has finally just put in an appearance to the South, we didn't get the snow showers that were promised and temp has climbed to 1.1°

*I must admit to being in rather a quandary about how falling snow is defined as light, moderate, heavy etc. Rainfall is defined as drizzle/light/moderate/heavy/torrential in relation to size of raindrop and volume of rain falling, but this obviously doesn't apply to snow, because, unlike in the case of rain formation, size of snowflake is related to air temperature. The lower the temperature the drier and snow and smaller the snowflake. During a particularly intense snowstorm, I have observed visibility reduced to 100 yards. One also has to be careful now to confuse the term "blizzard" with intensity/density of snow falling, and visibility thereby reduced: blizzard is already fallen snow being whipped up by wind.

I tend to differentiate between light/moderate/heavy snow as to whether I can see daylight between the flakes!! I did not know temperature affected size of flake, we only had very fine flakes here. Well, having been stuck in for 3 days I can report that it has resulted in me doing some mega housework and surfaces are now gleaming and polished, kitchen is pristine, and paperwork sorted and neatly filed!
BBM, drive carefully to work tomorrow!

Neighbour is getting me some milk tomorrow as cousin's garage is snowed up. Rationing starts here
