    None of those!

Thank you for the warning. I shall scan the news etc later....

Warm, cloudy, drizzly weather here. Snowdrops in the sunny border, south side of house, are in bloom about 6-8 weeks ahead of time. Anna, your photos of the frosty river and trees are beautiful. I hope all is well across the Atlantic.

Good luck Caliban. A very cold night and woke to severe frost and a thin layer of the white stuff. Next door's car is going to need some TLC before it will move.

It's not looking good for the East Midlands. Nottingham Newark and Lincoln all forecast for snow, heaviest between 12pm and 3pm. This is from BBC forecast: "Starting with icy stretches on untreated surfaces, followed by snow spreading east this later morning and this afternoon. Some locally heavy snowfall is possible, especially across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, giving 5-10cm of snow. Elsewhere 2-5cm is expected to accumulate"

It snowed here for around an hour yesterday evening, by dawn most of it had gone and was well above freezing so no ice or disruption getting to work and it has since rained. It's just dull, grey and heavy rain due at lunchtime.

It's a lovely sunny morning here. No snow but it's on the hills around the city. Good luck and keep safe to all travellers.

Trip cancelled! Snow lying quite thick in N'ham apparently and more falling. Not a time-critical journey, so one should heed the warnings and signs, think all concerned. Suits me!

Working in Sheffield today - a light covering in the Peak District when I set off, snow stuck to the trees and hedges (looked lovely too) but the roads clear.
Coming down quite heavily here in Sheffield for about the last hour, but still not settling.
Once my meetings are done I shall be skedaddling back though; hopefully in the light....

Got to drive up from London to Nott'm on Friday (pretty unavoidably). Hope the snow's all gone by then.

P.S. I see this is page 666 of the thread. Hope that's not a bad omen!

I woke up to find an icing sugar coating of snow outside. It's been snowing steadily for about an hour now but it isn't sticking. The crucial time will be tonight and whether or not whatever settles during the night freezes too so that the roads & pavements become like a skating rink

                              - plenty of snow still falling on the Pennines. Plenty of sludge underfoot.

Apologies to all for overlooking the thread - especially Caliban, who I see has sensibly decided not to motor north.

The official forecasters finally got it about right yesterday, forseeing the relatively mild tongue of air crossing Wales and predicting snow north of the Thames and rain to the south on this frontal system. It was amazing to observe light snow drifting down like feathers at 11 am turning to large, fast-falling snowflakes and then a fifty-fifty rain and snow mix, all within 2 hours, and where I am must now be right on the cusp between snow to the north and rain to the south, as we have about 90% rain and the odd blobs of snow managing to get through.

It does look as though the cold NE-erly will return later on tonight, once this frontal system has cleared off to the SE, with a snowy sting in the tail that's only expected to affect Essex and Kent, London being on the edge of it; the long term is for the easterly/north-easterly to take control for the rest of the week, which, with air coming straight down from the Baltic, will mean temperatures not far above freezing and dipping below at nights - the further west, the further below, this being the one "positive" consequence of the effect of warming produced by the North Sea. With a very much weakened jet stream in operation, can't see much chance of milder Atlantic air making it further than the continental shelf for another week, and so, uncharacteristically, I've just now readjusted my central heating thermostat by 8 hours!

Edit: 50/50 rain and snow as I write now - temperature's dropped from 2.5 to 2 C. Amazing what these tiny fluctuations in temperature bring about within this limited range!
