Horrible day here. Pouring rain all day, it never got properly light, and it was dark before four. What a change from yesterday!
Cold much improved, thanks for asking. Didn't have a curry but the hot toddy was most soothing (I must get some cheaper blended whisky for future occasions!)

I had an email yesterday evening from a friend who lives in NSW, Australia, re the fires. He said he went to the coast in the hope that it would be cooler but it was 43° and the situation out there is now officially described as 'catastrophic'

You'll be pleased to know that at the weekend one of the charity shops had a half-price book sale and although I don't normally read police/crime novels I came away with three Tartan Noir books, two by Ian Rankin and one by Stuart MacBride. All hardbacks in perfect condition for the sum of £3.

Saly, noticed some daffs here around 5" high but it's been a horribly dark day. Our local weather station published rainfall statistics and noted at the end There has been no measurable rain for the last four days (2 to 5 January), the first time there have been four dry days in a row since mid September!!

Glad to hear you are on the mend, and that the whisky helped.

The Australian situation is frightening. Your friend - and all there - have my sympathy.

Haven't read any MacBride, but am a great Rankin fan. Three books for £3 is an excellent deal.

Dry, overcast, and unseasonably mild here today.

Anna, today I noticed little shoots from the small narcissi bulbs, brought back from somewhere [Channel Islands ?] by a friend years ago. I planted them in the wrong place - front garden facing North, and they always fall over when they get tall because of the high winds we seem to get here.

Coz from Adelaide phoned on Sunday but seemed to know very little of the fires ranging in various places.
He held open house on Christmas Day and they all picknicked on the beach. He has lost his wife to cancer but has lots of friends, bless him.

                we probably DO

Why don't British people have 50 words for rain... or at least more words than the few they normally employ, asks Kevin Connolly.

wanted to ask his views on forecast of very cold weather next week and thereafter ....
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Well done saly! We await news. I seem to be almost fighting fit again, luckily it was short lived, I hope your foot also improves soon.
I see we are possibly threatened with snow after the weekend, there's a horrible low approaching and as from Monday it seems temperatures are set to plummet. It's been a brilliantly sunny day with absolutely clear skies so I anticipate a sharp frost here. (Offtopic, I am greatly enjoying the Ian Rankin novel)

What Rankin are you reading? Have you ever tried Christopher Brookmyre?
