Despite the dire warnings the last two days haven't been as bad as predicted. It's rained continuously since Tuesday night but not torrentially and no high winds so it's been possible to use an umbrella. In fact, it's probably been typical December weather. I was really surprised to see the flooding in Hampshire.

However, the river here is looking extremely swollen and comes over very quickly. Here is a photo taken just round the corner from me the last time it flooded the road, you wouldn't believe there is not only a pavement on the left hand side but a raised footpath further along where it bends. No houses are threatened as we are all safely just up the hill but it's a nuisance as the only way out is up to the top of the very steep hill and then all round the houses which is not feasible for pedestrians or cyclists, therefore those without vehicles have to rely on cabs to get back and forth to town. The road in the distance dips considerably so it gets really deep there. Once it goes down the road remains closed until the Council remove all the mud/silt/debris.

The Welsh part of the Road Closed sign must be underwater!

It's been raining heavily here all day, with strong winds in the morning. 998 mb and 6°C. A9 closed because of flooding north of Dunkeld. No reports of any trouble nearer than that, so far at least.

I've never known the Council to put up a Ffordd Ar Gau sign, it's all a bit hit and miss, the bilingual stuff here, on the borders, when it comes to emergency road signs. I think they put up the English signs to stop the incomers in their 4x4s suing the Council for lack of warnings!!
I've had enough of the weather, fed up with it, totally, so depressing. I am going to have bangers and mash and fried onions with HP Sauce. So there!! And I will love it!

Sounds delicious - something I've not had in years.

OT, I've looked out at intervals all evening, and each time the rain has been coming down unceasingly.

The river did come over early yesterday evening, not a full scale flood but the Council shut the road overnight with, I can report, a bilingual roadsign! It receded early monring but the river is still high and moving slowly as it's backing up trying to flow into the main river. Looking at the forecast for nonstop rain tomorrow, (and it's building up rain clouds at the moment) Sunday and Monday I suspect it'll be over again either Sunday or Monday. So I intend to purchase all necessary Christmas foodstuff tomorrow just in case that happens.
I went into Waitrose at lunchtime and it wasn't the usual heaving frenzied buying of previous years. I also purchased from the Coop a bargain 70cl bottle of Glenmorangie whisky for £16 (it was on offer for £21 but I had £5 worth of Coop vouchers) I know nothing about whisky, but I like a wee dram now and again and I know it's the whisky of choice for french frank. I imagine the bottle will last me until next Christmas!

Best of luck, anybody living in the yellow warning areas. An almost springlike shortest day of the year here in London today, sunshine in short doses at 9 C to lift spirits other than the bottled kind!

You'll enjoy that, Anna, the more so that you got it at an excellent price. You can also discuss how to pronounce it, as it is frequently mispronounced - and that includes by many Scots.

OT - Sorry to hear about your weather, but relieved to hear that the Council now have the correct bilingual road sign in place. It's still raining here, and some of my colleagues had trouble getting into work today because of floods.

That's interesting because I asked for Glen-mor-angie and the assistant repeated something that sounded like Glen-more-orangey! So, how you to say it?
Sorry to see also that Scotland has an even worse forecast than we have here in mm's of rain for tomorrow.
There must be a joke flying about with Santa saying, it's only rain, dear! (?)

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Yes, accent on second syllable, and the word rhymes with "orangey", as in "orange flavoured". Here is Dundonian actor Brian Cox.

Still raining as I write. I'm glad I live on a hill, but some poor souls in Tayside could be in for some bad flooding, I fear. As a Christmas quiz I did today has it, it's not rain, dear, it's precipitation, darling.
