I am suitably put through the ringer, saly.

Pleasant enough day here in London, moderate westerly breeze, temperatures normal (7 C) as one would expect, but there's a long line of high clouds now apearing on the NW horizon, indicating an approaching weather system similar to yesterday afternoon's, now affecting the W Midlands and NW.

Looking forward, once we've got this evening's and tonight's repeat of yesterday's downpour weather out of the way, Wednesday night into Thursday, and Saturday, look set for some very heavy rain for us here in the SE, according to Simon Keeling at Weatherweb. He goes on to predict mildish but fairly wet weather from then on to Christmas Eve, and slightly below normal temperatures for Christmas Day, though not sufficiently cold for snow, except over the Scottish Highlands.

Went to an organ recital, at Worth Abbey, Turners hill, West Sussex. D'Arcey Trenkwon was the organist, infact the church organist to. Absolutely amazing!

Broad ribbon of wooly-looking cirrus right across the sky to the south all day, indicating the location of the jet stream. When you see such a long, straight parade of cirrus like this, the jet stream is what it most probably is: it gives you a good idea of where the next depression is coming from!

S_A, I love your descriptions of clouds, and had no idea that cirrus indicates the jet stream! I realise that apart from identifying mackerels, mares tails and cumulus I don't know enough about clouds, I must look for a book (although I know there are plenty of identification sites on the Net)
This morning, from first light, clear skies, SSW breeze then darkening at lunch time with uniform low cloud and now rain. Cloud base first thing was 2000ft - suddenly dropped to 1000ft, wind seems to have shifted to SW. I did see on the Met chart that ominous low coming in on Wednesday... as long as it stays mild with no snow I won't complain

Oh, as in "Don't worry your pretty little head about it" That's ok, I can go and stroke some fluffy kittens instead of gazing at fluffy clouds ..... I would also have your know I have my own compass, which I carry with me at all times in order to check the prevailing winds ..

it is currently raining. earlier it was beautiful sunny weather, but then the sky lowered and it began to be very damp and misty.

i think i prefer the sharp, cold weather with blue skies to blighty damp.

Handsome Fortune. Well it works in a way. Due west is where the planes disappear on their way to landing at Heath Row.
My best sighting was three Concords in line along the top of the little local shops, on their last flight some years ago.

I like hearing about the weather forecasts but at my age can't be bothered by barometers.

Proliferous apologies to all for my bad last two forecasts. (Hangs in shame). Everyone's agreed it looks pretty bleak for the next few days, unfortunately.

S_A, I don't think you got your forecasts wrong, you said heavy rain coming on Wednesday and I've just looked at the Met Office animation It seems it'll hit here around 9am and be with you Londoners around 3pm. Lots of pockets of nasty orange and red blobs continuing into Thursday!

Today has been clear skies all the way, now thin cloud covering from the SW and getting misty, no wind at all, it says it's been about 9C but it certainly hasn't felt that warm. I watched the second programme on steam trains last night which was mainly about the Severn Valley Line, which I also know (repeated tomorrow BBC4 10pm) but I found the previous, about the Welsh narrow gauge more interesting I think. I've been looking at possible purchase of book about weather, two names that seem to be prominent are Richard Hamblyn and Storm (!) Dunlop, anyone got any of them or should I go for the Met Office one?

I honestly don't know who are the best authors on meteorology, I'm afraid, Anna.

Oh and btw that thin high cloud you've noticed is the advance guard of the frontal system that's expected to bring all the rain tomorrow. The winds have dropped where you are, but will pick up from the south and then back south-easterly during the evening - I expect!
