Maxed at + 3 here this afternoon after dipping to - 3 last night with the first proper white frost of the winter. Not that the degree of whiteness is any measure of coldness, but it looked impressive!

The Xmas food hoarders are already piling up their trollies in the local St Spree's . Ten minute wait in a queue - and we've got almost 4 weeks to the happy day.

Well then we were warmer than you, maxed up to 5.2° around 2pm. This morning's frost was not too severe although it was initially a clear night, lovely moon rising as well but only -2.3° min overnight. Goodness, are we turning into a pair of weather anoraks!
Know what you mean about Christmas panic buying, it was manic at lunchtime, it's only 2 days, how many mince pies do you want in the freezer? Half of it will get chucked out. Waitrose are discounting all Heston B's stuff, doesn't surprise me, his hot cross buns with earl grey and clemantine are rubbish.

Thank you for all your good wishes. There were nae hitches; with my sister i/c everyone's too frightened. She really is a brilliant organiser. There are however about fifty boxes to unpack, and I have an electric cooker to connect, so back to St A tomorrow. The town was really buzzing - full of students, and today is a graduation day - and the pubs and hotels were all offering special St A's day deals. It was bitter - -1°C this morning, and max 3°C today - but a lovely day with brilliant sunshine.

*Pedant warning.... I know baroms measure pressure, but perhaps Anna's is an all-singing all-dancing affair that does temp also.

Not all-singing all-dancing I'm afraid, just a normal barometer, it's a twin-capsule and temperature compensated (I don't know what that means but it sounds impressive!) I get the temperatures from the local weather station which is 3 miles away, they've been keeping records since 1920 (and looking back over rainfall records, etc., is interesting) At the moment they have a wired Davis Vantage pro weather station which gives all usual info plus cloudbase, solar radiation, on their live page they have dials also showing wind speed, gusts, etc. It's on a farm which has been in the same family for generations and I imagine farming and needing to know forecasts is one of the reasons they started. The Met Office observations when I put in my postcode comes from a weather station 17 miles away and a very different altitude.

The barometer over the last 24 hours has climbed from 1009 to 1012 and is steady, a low of -3.1° overnight and at the moment it's 2.2°, it's bright and sunny but a low mist on the fields by the river.

You were unlucky, no rain here - but clear hard cold weather. Fighting the threat of a headcold here, sneezes and blocked nose In now, and staying in: definitely following the salyplan from now on till the end of the weekend!

I wish you better Cali. I nearly passed out when cooking a Cumberland big sausage, mash and tomato cuppasoup. My back is very bad after doing the washing, etc. and my hearing has been really odd in the last hour - my voice is echoing round my head. No it's not the Stone's Ginger Wine, the bottle is empty.


Soon be the shortest day anyway. Then there's January, February, ugh I'm going to lie down.

Earlier on today, we had a hard frost from last night, then fog and the sub trying to come through.
