The only time I ate haggis was on an all night coach trip to the Edinburgh Festival. It was much cheaper than the train but took nearly 20 hours from Victoria Coach Station. To be offered haggis AT 5AM after sitting in a coach all nightand only as far as the Borders when we stopped for breakfast. Ugh.

where did that miraculous blue sky go? it was heaven manifest and such light ... now bleak and haggis free, the best black pudding i have had was in Holland, large diameter, full of rye cereal; one drunken night we flambéed it in Rye Whiskey ... too p*ssed to know what we were eating really but a memorable occasion nonetheless ...

It's been warmer today, 13° but the blue quickly turned to light grey. I've been thinking how lucky we are not to have to endure hurricanes and extreme weather. I have family in Connecticut so keeping an eye on Sandy's progress, they got badly hit by Irene last year. I know salymap has relatives in the area as well and let's hope our marthe stays safe.

Having done a bit of research into pies I find various Scottish pie makers selling - macaroni cheese pies! (with the same hot water pastry as Scotch Pies) I've never heard of them but I do like macaroni cheese so I'd give them a whirl, plus a chippy in Glasgow does deep fried doner kebabs! Which sounds horrendous. I've had traditional Scotch Pies (made with lamb, not mince and not deep fried) and remember them as being extremely delicious. Unfortunately I cannot remember where I used to be able to buy them as I really fancy one at the moment....

I've never had a macaroni cheese pie, and I wouldn't touch a doner kebab - deep fried or not. I was having a look on line aminute ago,. and I see there are some butchers who do mail order, so that might be worth thinking about. Of course, when you come to Scotland next year, you can go home laden with pies, Tunnocks teacakes, snowballs and caramel wafers, and Irn Bru!

Report from Newport, RI and the edge of the storm. We were just out near the beaches and the surf is quite dramatic. So far power is still on, low-lying areas are flooded (we are well out of the flood zone). The winds are brisk but will increase by evening as the storm centre gets closer. We are supposed to get quite a bit of wind-driven rain. The worst of the storm arrives around this evening's high tide (8:32 EDT). I expect things will get worse before too long. My sisters in NYC/NJ are report that Grand Central Station closed last night and that the Connecticut Turnpike is closed as well. Fingers crossed for saly's and Anna's rels in CT. My big worry is that one of our trees might come down. Handsome Husband is now down the pub having a pint of Newport Storm (beer brewed by local brewery of same name).
