    thanks

following the logic of that then, at the equator ("mid-hemispheres") the sun rises and sets in the same places (due east and west) all year round ?

......... and at exactly the same time morning and evening every day?

Indeed. Also, there is no, or very little, twilight in the tropics.

Well there is some very slight variability at the Equator, I'd assume, as the sun seasonally moves north and south to be directly overhead at midday at the respective tropics.

(I'd be interested to know the solar index worldwide btw - in the UK it goes from 0-7. Is the maximum index 10, does anyone know?)

A related topic, and one I'm interested in, though admittedly I haven't looked into it much, is when deciduous trees lose their leaves in the tropical/equatorial zone. This appears to vary from species to species, as with conifers in the temperate zones, so that when some trees in the tropics are springing new leaves, others are shedding.

Perelandra is a somewhat weird novel by CS Lewis - does anyone still read his science fiction? My father was a great fan.

It's been a perfect day so far, waking to rapidly clearing mist then blue skies and sunshine and warmth but the temperature here is also rapidly dropping and it's getting cloudy. Last night was brilliantly clear and it was lovely to see brightness in the sky and then the moon slowly emerging over the hill, it's always an amazing sight. Lots of twinkly stars and Venus shining bright, but first thing this morning was only 3.6 degrees. If rain comes (as is forecast to do in buckets) then it'll get warmer I guess. No sign yet of the trees turning and showing any colour although the Woodland Trust promise this year will be spectacular.

Spectacular morning's drive into work - "mist into air dissolving" - and lots of sunshine the rest of the day. A couple of brief but heavy downpours: I was outside in both of them!

Sunny in London it says but wet underfoot and murky here. My beech hedge is turning colour and dropping leaves which seem to get everywhere.

Excitement of the day - a flu jab later. Shall play some CDs then I think. Bestio

                        At least it's not raining.

First thing I wished I'd remembered my gloves, but now it's mild and fairly sunny.

Yes; this sort of thing has happened quite a bit over the past fortnight in the Pennines: the clothes needed to face the early mornings have been too much for the afternoons. Getting to about 12 degrees each day - bright and sunny at the moment (good drying weather).

Likewise my two recent trips to Italy Walking to the Heathrow express in the morning, coat required... which immediately on arrival at the other end was an annoying encumbrance - by afternoon, anything other than shirt sleeves was unbearable. Ah well! Mustn't complain!

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
