I too was wondering what they meant by most intense storm in September and assumed it meant volume of rain rather than what we think of as a 'storm' i.e., with thunder and gales? My sister has been on a P&O city cruise, (inc. St. Petersburg - lucky her) arrives back in Newcastle Harbour today, has to make her way through Co. Durham to almost the border with North Yorks. Think if I were her I'd opt for the nearest hotel to the harbour! We've had 4 hours of dry today and at the moment it's stair rods. The block of flats in Newburn, Newcastle, with foundations washed away is incredible, never seen anything like that, but it doesn't seem to be on a river, evidently a blocked culvert caused a landslide due to underground stream? At least that's what I think it says happens. And, I mentioned the houses here built on floodplain, well - they did flood on Monday. Again.

Mr Gibbs says 973 millibars is the lowest reading for a September since 1981

I think the people of Newburn are a bit cross about the building work that has gone on thereabouts

So it was deeper than I realised! Thanks for that information, mercia. Am I right in thinking you're located somewhere in Kent? There were some quite severe thunderstorms in parts of that county yesterday, which missed us.

Had a goup of players from the LPO, come to to the school where I work, yestereday. Very encouraging to see what the students can learn and pick up so quickly More of this kind of work should be encouraged, I think.

I expect S_A is familiar with it.

No I had no idea about that site, Pianorak. For one such as me it's a real weathernerd's paradise, so, many thanks indeed!

I had wanted to cycle down to the Brixton Rumbelows looking for a replacement DVD remote. Now it's raining!

Is that akin to the Chiltern Hundreds?

There's a very funny looking sky over to the west. Once again I shan't go out. A snooze sounds nice.....

I think that's what happens if you eat a dodgy goat curry in the open market down there, no?

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

We've had a very funny-looking sky over to the east this morning. Now (almost noon) it's starting to rain. This morning, while walking the cliffs overlooking the ocean, the sea was the color of slate, the sky looked like corrugated sheet metal. There's a brisk and chill east wind blowing. The rain is certainly welcome as it's been dry, dry, dry here. It's time to get the chimneys cleaned and the wood stacked. A good fire in the kitchen fireplace wouldn't go amiss today. I would enjoy a snooze too, but need to go out and do some shopping this afternoon. We have a wedding to go to next weekend so I need to look for a suitable gift.

                              Lovely description marthe!
Did anyone enjoy the cloudless starry night yesterday, moon coming up to full, bathing indoors with brilliant light?
