Thank you S_A for weather observations, very interesting and I guess this erratic pattern is what we have to look forward to. Today has been dry, rain forecast but so far not arrived, although not very sunny but climbed to 14 but last night was chilly at 8. Our Northern contingent have had it bad today so best wishes to them and hoping they are flood free.

As to building on flood plains, we've had the experience here, it seems the County Council planning department take no notice of alluvial (is that the right word?) experts and then wonder why houses built on water meadows (the clue is in the name!) flood after building and are now uninsurable ......

It started raining at teatime on Sunday and hasn't stopped since. Nothing heavy, just a constant drizzle - they've been less lucky downstream in Hebden Bridge.

As for building on flood plains, our local news weatherman actually bought such a property! (With predictable results )

It's rained on and off for several days now, just enough to spoil plans for a house/garden party. Still it was cosy indoors and all went well.
Now it's sunny but chilly, it got dark here at 6.40 last night and autumn is well advanced.

I hope my Scottish friends on the MB and antongould, hovering between the two countries, are not flooded out.

I feel only Berwick - which is still at war with Russia - could be said to hover between the two! However as to the weather -very wet, Chester-Le-Street, a mile and a half away, made it to the national news but thankfully it's all uphill to here! Has just stopped raining.

Sorry anton, I've only coached through those parts on my way to the Edinburgh Festival about a hundred years ago. I think Berwick is where we were given haggis for breakfast at about 5am. A never to be forgotten meal at that hour.Ugh.

Apparently the most intense September storm to hit Britain in 30 years. Hmmm - must check - but I s'pose it all depends on what one means by "intense". Depth of pressure at the centre of the low? - 980 millibars isn't that low for a September depression in our vicinity; tightness of the isobars, and hence force of the winds at their max? volume of rainfall, size of area affected, etc.?

Still, I suppose these dramatic headlines are of little import to those poor people who were flooded out for the third time, having been "assured" that flood defenses that were to have been done in 2008 have still been held up by planning delays.

The only personal consolation I've got from all this is that I got my predictions right.
