According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Lovely sunny weather. We walked up to Beacon Hill Iron Age Fort near Newbury. Very steep but superb views on top and incongruously Lord Caernarvon's gravestone. Using Betjeman's Parish Church Guide we ended up in the nearby village of Ashmansworth. Gerald Finzi lived next to the tiny unspoilt Saxon-Norman Church and is buried there. In the porch there is a memorial window for him and English music in general. I found a photo online:
This is a memorial to Gerald Finzi who lived in the house next to the church and his family still lives there.

Thanks for the photo, gurnemanz - it's a lovely part of the world, glad you had such a fantastic day,

I wonder if the place where Finzi spent his later days still has the apple orchards with specialised apples Finzi prided himself on helping preserve.

A distinct change of air in the last 2 hours - outside now, a definite cooler atmosphere (and different from the hot recently-used bathroom feel outside at a similar time last night), announcing a more comfortable day tomorrow
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Yes, a good way of describing the stale air, Caliban. I hope today is better for us all. This weather makes me get up in the morning still tired out.

Yes indeed - at a comfortable 20 C right now, cloudy, and the odd spot of rain not amounting to too much, I am quite looking forward to pedal powering my route to Oxford Street this afternoon, to have another go...

Well, the Met Office tells me that it's raining where I live with a temperature of 19 C (is there a little "degrees" symbol anywhere on a keyboard?). Nobody's told the weather: scarcely a cloud anywhere (any that there are are white, fluffy Simpsons-type affairs) and it's hot: 24 C according to my outdoor thermometer.

That's our weather too! it's supposed to be raining and coolish but the sun is out with, I love this, "Simpson's" clouds! I'm keeping fingers crossed for good weather over this coming weekend. #1 Son and girlfriend are arriving from San Fran. on Thursday for a 6-day stay. I believe that this is meant to be the official bring girl-friend-home-to-meet-parents visit which has me scurrying around the house in despair as I contemplate dust bunnies under the bed and plaster cracks in the spare bedroom. OK back to work please...time to tackle the dust bunnies!

Afternoon marthe, I love the sound of dust bunnies. I'm sure my home has lots. Better outside but half my fanlight windows won't open and I can't climb on a chair to give them a good push so rely on the back door being open mostof the time.

7 a.m. Get up. Dark, dull. Starts raining and continues to rain for over 2 hours (this was not forecast), slowly clears to blue sky with fluffy clouds, local weather station says it peaked at just over 23C. Looking ahead it appears we stay dry until Friday when we enter another prolonged wet spell and a typical August bank holiday.
