OMG, is this now a lettuce thread? Rocket, well, yes, terribly chi-chi, doesn't taste nice. Watercress, now you're talking, packed full of stuff which is good for you. Iceberg lasting a week - its only good point. Now, how about lambs lettuce, endive, romaine, radicchio, lollo rosso? Actually lettuce is terribly high in Vit K, no-one should ever eat it if on Warfarin. Lettuce is also terribly soporific. Anyone with insomnia, eat a whole lettuce and you'll soon be in the arms of Morpheus. Whether he likes it or not!!

So long since I've seen "chi-chi" used in anger!

Well, now you come to mention it .......... I won't mention it!! It will be our little secret!
As to rocket, it's ok diluted but I don't care for it neat. S_A, do you have a windowledge? Then do as I do and grow mixed salad leaves, they're ready to harvest in less than a month and are cut and come again. Really easy to grow and very attractive plus tasty.
Ontopic, a dry day, sunny spells, about 17, but very windy and with an edge to it.

I don't actually, Anna. Or, at least, they're all too narrow to attach window boxes to. We do have a garden here, but I dread to think what other tenants and residents would do if they found out I was surreptitiously using it for growing my own food!

No, don't jump!!! Actually I mean an indoor windowledge, like in the kitchen? That's where I grow my mixed salad leaves, plus parsley, coriander, basil, etc.

taste buds aside, we can all agree on the nutritional advantage i suspect. if there's enough, watercress soup's good (imo), though nutritionally it's best raw.....same as all the other fresh veg.

for an old fashioned, instant 'dickensian look', don't bother checking your teeth after eating seeds, and leafy vegetation such as watercress. though staying 'home alone' is advisable.

Those poor people in the US, being affected by those storms. I hope our member Marthe is alright? Any news? Looks like we will be having a period of bad weather here, smilar to what the mid west US is having also the Eastern Seeboard to.Washington I see is experioncing temps of 103.3F!

Here I think we will be having some sunshine, with some showers developing later.

Extremely frustrating day. The "experts" had forecasted a few light shattered scoures - as had I - and I used the expectation to include my towelling dressing gown in my Sunday laundry basket, and stick it on the line. Since when it has rained on and off, and just now absolutely bucketted down.

But, measured against the problems experienced on Thursday in Yorkshire and further north, and yesterday in the States, these are miniscule inconveniences.

Ironically, I had expected the storms in America.

BBM it's been hot here but not as bad as in the mid west. The sea breeze moderates our temps quite a bit. We did have some very hot days last week (for the flower show...wilting roses etc.) I expect we'll be getting some of the more extreme weather that's now west of us. It all comes this way eventually. Coastal New England is usually better off than the inland because of the sea breeze. Here in Newport, that breeze kicks in like clockwork at 1 PM every afternoon. It's a sorry day when it's dead calm. The America's Cup trials have had fair winds for their races over the past week. Just after 4th of July, we have Tall Ships coming in. It's the summer of the sail! More disturbing than the heat are the wildfires that are out of control in Colorado near Colorado Springs and in Pocatello, Idaho. A friend's grandson sent footage of houses in his neighborhood going up in flames! Quite frightening.
