Woke early this morning and caught this fascinating programme about woodcock on Radio 4
I had no idea that they were so numerous in UK and that we get so many winter visitors. The things you learn in bed on a Sunday morning waiting for the heating to come on

We don't seem to get any interesting birds at the moment. Sparrows, pigeons, gulls circling overhead but afraid to fly low because of the telephone cables.
I often listen to those early programmes on R4 ams, thanks for the link, over and out. Minus 3 at the moment, brr.Comment

Hello S-A. Still feels cold to me and birdbath hasn't thawed yet. I hoped to walk to the supermarket but can't face it as soooo cold.Comment

Bit nippy here too saly. We mentioned lack of rain before, the drought summit is taking place today and there is an interesting piece in The Guardian about the situation, I hadn't realised some river levels, such as the Kennet, were so low.

Very unusual. The highs are back again to the south, and the lows to the north - which is as mostly expected for the UK - but, in contrast to the past couple of years, the highs are much further north than one would normally expect at this time of year, with the Azores high, and break-offs from it, spreading across lattitudes that one would more usually associate with a hot summer.Originally posted by Anna View Post

Much warmer this morning, and easier to leap singing from one's bed (if only)... Nice bit of morning sun, as well. My neighbour pollarded the walnut in the front yesterday, and I spent a while dragging branches round the back. They'll burn nicely in a year or so.Comment

Yes may attempt the supermarket, which now takes 25 minutes walk each way. I may be some time, hope the drought continues for the next hour or so.Comment

They're still talking up the drought; (Cleese: Don't mention the drought). Looking at the charts on behalf of our aquifers, I'd say next week looks fairly promising down here for some really decent, thoroughly bad weather.Comment

Yes just back S-A. It took me 25 hours to walk both ways Thoroughly wet, windy and miserable here and am off for a sleep, if possible.
Have been looking at the Lucian Freud programme on Iplayer but can't stay awake much longer. Very interesting though.Comment

It's been - unpleasant is the only word. Cold, windy, and that horrible, driving, fine rain that somehow makes you wetter than the heavy stuff. Is there a scientific explanation for that? All to the drought, Farmers Weekly have interesting total rainfall maps for the last ten years which makes interesting viewing. Any idea S_A of weather conditions for the big match at Twickenham on Saturday?Comment
