Happy New Year to you too saly! 2012 begins in half an hour for you but we've another 5 1/2 hours to go before we pop the cork and greet the New Year. We don't have a TV anymore so won't be watching the ball drop in Times Square this year. Years ago, for New Year's eve, we used to put the radio dial on the SW band to listen for the chimes of Big Ben at midnight on BBC World Service. That's when we rang home to Mum and Dad just at midnight (7 PM for us.) Best wishes to everyone for the New Year!

Keep safe everyone. Even here in the S/E Kent/, nearly London now [ugh] the weather is foul and filthy.

Very, very windy, driving rain and dark. Coffee and cake for me as therapy.

Luckily I don't have to go anywhere until this evening, by which time the wind and rain is supposed to have eased off. Cycling in this would be....interesting.

The rain here in Salisbury is horrendous. The front windows of my house resemble a waterfall. The night felt and sounded like being tossed about in a small boat. Take care, everyone.

                    Such a sensible response, salymap!

It was very bad during the night and this morning until around 11am, brief respite and it's closed in again just as bad, winds gusting up to 50mph, several trees down blocking roads, luckily no flood warnings or lack of power here but temperature has dropped considerably. Cake seems the best option!

Well at least the 15 minute midday deluge as the cold front passed through appears to have washed my windows clean! Apparently winds gusted up to around 60 mph - only 15 mph short of hurricane force - but for a brief time the rain was of an intensity I've only seen in footage of hurricanes, visibility down to 200 metres, broken off branches thwacking into the glass. Pretty scary!

Yes it really was an extremely violent storm. Calming down now thankfully.

I have lost a couple of fence panels and some felt off the shed roof but other than that I seem to be relatively unscathed.

Hope it stays relatively calm as I have to cycle into work later on....

Meanwhile, the Mersey is billowy and the wind is pounding us all, even at 3.30pm. Thisd ould have been a good day to use the ferry but who on earth wants to go to Birkenhead?

Wow, that was quite a wind, even in our relatively sheltered spot. Nearly got blown over as I emerged from the station after Xmas hols.

Only had 4 hours sleep last night and have just woken from sleep on the bed. The wind and rain are as bad as ever again.

Earlier at one point water was pouring through the letter box on the front door,Scary!
