Licked its tongue into the corners of the evening,
Lingered upon the pools that stand in drains,

And seeing that it was a soft October night,
Curled once about the house, and fell asleep.

Brilliant stuff isn't it, vinchaud and saly...

It was definitely a T.S. Eliot / Atkinson Grimshaw sort of evening today, glad to be indoors again with tea and a chocolate éclair

(Incidentally, I remember Atkinson Grimshaw being the source of amusement in the episode of 'Minder' where Arthur Daley gets into fine art - it was the first time I'd ever heard of him. Call me a pleb. An AG is even depicted in an auction catalogue, I recall.)

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

There is a wistful charm, a tenderness,
Mysterious and soft, in autumn's even:
The trees in weird and brilliant dress,
      The gory leaves to whispered talk are given;
Above the sad and orphaned, the skies
Lie veiled and bleak, the sun's departure mourning,
And gusty winds with sudden anger rise,
Of pending storms the grim and chilly warning...
Fatigue, decline, and - over all - the worn
And wasting spirit's smile, doomed soon to vanish

      Fyodor Ivanovich Tyutchev

      Chet Baker. Autumn Leaves

Oh, watch. It's marvellous. I think.

I've just been reading the Beecham thread from 2008 and it makes me sad all over again at the good people we've apparently 'lost', one way or another. Thosaitch, smittims, many more.

A 'guest' drew my attention to it as he/she listed it this morning.

                  Morning, saly and all:

"one way and another" - not so much the one way that bothers me (after all, that's it) but unfortunately all those anothers are scarey...

                  if you catch my drift.

                      Mornin' sal et al

Watching the news is pretty scary. Especially thr possibility of ground-to-air misslles being deployed to protect the Olympics - just a few miles from my doorstep.

In 10 days we'll have reached the first anniversary of Stormy Weather here on FoR3.

A beautiful Autumn morning in Wiltshire - sunny and mild. I did some gardening and chose Neil Young's Harvest as approriate earphone material. It's a good album which I hadn't heard for a while. It came out in 1972 when I was 23. Mr Young, only slightly more gnarled than me, is four years my senior.

I don't listen anything like as much as I do to 'classical' but yes, having played my trombone in a swing band and learnt to like playing the piano through Scott Joplin as well as Shostakovich, I came to jazz via Ellington and Basie on the one hand, Oscar P and Bill Evans on the other, with an option on jazz trumpeters - M Davis, C Baker and W Marsalis among others.

I also have a slight fetish for the Hammond organ
