I only had little icicles but they too have thawed. It is a damp, cold and dismal morning here in Southampton - the occasional wet lump still clinging to the branches. Treacherous underfoot - I'll need my stick again, no doubt.

Yes salymap I got your message - you are becoming very expert at this! For the first time in a long time we have had no real snow in the night - but there is more still to come those friendly forecasters tell us!!!

Anton I've just written again on visitors' messages and 'they' told me my messagewas too short and would I edit it. As it was four lines annd filled the space Idon't understand. Anyway I was extolling the CD of london Horn Sound which is wonderful{ a la AnnaRussell,"I'mnot being paid forsaying this, you know". Best from salymap PS Messy thaw butI'm not going out, too slippery.

cannot understand that at all? I will try a message on your "space" later! Bit of a thaw here too - I was sent out by Lady Gould for milk but I took Elgar 1 with me which helped!

I probably shouldn't be asking this on a Radio 3 Forum, but if like me your car has got stuck in the snow (in my case in the driveway) and the wheels are spinning, is it better to put one's dry bit of sacking/whatever in front or behind the drive wheels? Tried both - getting nowhere fast. All suggestions gratefully received.

Glad to hear you're free, but for future reference..... It depends on whether you're going forward or in reverse.

Put the sacking in the direction you're heading.

(Am I being silly? Is this a wind up?)

The snow's melting rapidly here now, leaving behind slush and drizzle. Much nastier IMO although at least the tap at the back of the house is no longer frozen. It was -9 when I started off for work yesterday morning - the coldest temperature recorded in Malvern for 100 years according to the local paper. Still balmy compared to some parts of the country, though.

I still dare not walk to my rubbish bins, all at the side of house by the side gate. The reason, enormous dripping, then falling icicles. Something tells me I need expensive new guttering. Help, more bills.

Sal-- sorry to hear it! I tried to look up an easy way to fix everything, but there's not really any quick, cheap solution.
Have you tried throwing rocks to get them before they get you?

However, I did find something that suggests it could be a problem with insulation in your attic. You don't have leaks too, do you? Agh.
Don't forget your Yaktrax or other anti-ice shoe grippers:

I had the same problem with icicles (now thawed) from one gutter, salymap, and managed to get a man out today to look at it. It was only a blocked gutter, leaves and so on. Although the icicles had gone, he took out long gutter-shaped blocks of ice!

I'd just posted this elsewhere when I saw your post.

Thanks Mary and Euda. I shall wait and see what happens next. More interesting than most TV these days.

This afternoon, I was singing in a choir at a wedding. No problems with the journey - just getting out of the car park. I could have done with your help, Hercule.
