I guess congratulations are in order, and many happy musical relaxations to come - but perhaps an outside bench is more useful just at the moment?

All trains from my local station to the SW are down today. Nothing on the website last night announcing trouble o'er t'weekend; just as well I rode over to the station to make sure: I'm due at a garden do in Sutton at 3.30. Now I'm going to have to cycle the 11 miles each way on what is a warm and humid day. Typical ****** Southern Rail! The sooner it's re-nationalised the better. Fat chance under this lot!

Overcast but very warm and close this morning with just a few spots of rain now disappeared.

Sorry to hear of your train trouble, SA, but East Midlands Trains up here are fine. Remembering the truly awful days of BR around 20-25 years ago re-nationalisation is most definitely not wanted.

I remember, when I moved back up here in 1993, paying just £24 for my single from Bristol TM to Paddington and sticking my bike in the guard's van. Always the same fare rate, no problems of pre-booking and trying vainly to work out the cheapest travel at the least convenient days and times, just straight into the "staffed" local station, you bought your ticket, with nothing more to worry about except the odd delay or cancellation, which was as nothing compared to the way Southern operates today, cancelling 350 trains per day and blaming all their problems on union actions, which actually are opposing driver-only trains when, more than ever in these insecure times, guards are needed to make passengers feel (and actually be) safer by having someone in charge at each end and keeping an eagle eye in case of trouble the driver obviously can't get to.

Shade temperatures much cooler, thank goodness! - all windows flung open to refresh things in here.

Boy o boy! if you're motoring (or travelling by other road means) between Croydon and Sutton, first make sure you either have a very reliable road map or ditto satnav! And under no circs believe Southern Network's website. There were no trains from my local station down there yesterday, which I only found out on reaching the station. A very "helpful" station official said my "best" option was to get a replacement bus to Balham, where I would need to change onto another replacement bus to take me to my destination. By this point I had an hour to meet my appointment arrival time, and set off on my bike. The road going west from Croydon is unbelievably badly signposted, as a consequence of which I ended up south of somewhere called Carshalton, not having a clue where I was, and had to ask a man tending to his garden in which direction Sutton lay. "About three miles that way" he indicated. Similar problems on the way back: one turning taking me into a supermarket car park, another through an industrial estate. A journey which should have been about 19 miles in all ended up being around 25! OK, maybe I could have taken my small version A-Z, but together with essentials such as basic repair gear, iced water in flask and a cape for in case it rained (it did, on the way back!) it would have been too much weight to carry on what was quite a hot day: I didn't want to arrive at my hosts bathed in sweat! I just hope it's normal train services on Aug 7, when I'm invited back there!

Well, www.yr.no is the weather station I consult and they got today smack on hour by hour, and as I had to be outside for most of the day and not under cover, I was grateful forits accuracy. Providing you were active, today was fine, but the wind was blustery oop 'ere, and only fleeting bursts of watery sun.

Farmers silage-making and harvesting recommended the website as one they really take notice of.

Something of a rapid cooling down here though still 25 degrees inside as I write. Blustery wind here too and little sunshine. Temp no more than 23 degrees outside but the wind made it feel colder.
