Heavy bouts of rain and gusts of wind last night, but the forecast all-day storms haven't emerged yet here in the Pennines. Instead, sunshine all morning and quite mild temperatures - still very blustery, though.

Well - an hour after I posted that, the skies darkened and the heavens opened.

And an hour after that, the rain stopped, the skies brightened and it's been a lovely, sunny evening! (The winds have eased off a bit, too.)

Very much the experience down yurr in London too. I had hoped to have dry washing on the line for the first time this year, saving me the cost of spin drying etc., and put the laundry out with no sign of anything untoward approaching. Half an hour later a loud clap of thunder alerted me to the real world out there, and I had to dash out and rescue the, by that point, wildly flailing washing on line. I could have just waited for the storm to pass, because from then until the last hour it was sunny, with enough wind to have dried everything nicely!

Tomorrow looks like staying indoors all day will be the only option.

We've had this storm, nearly all night and still raging! Hmmm....perhaps not has bad as earlier though but still rather scary!

I'm due at work shortly for one of our event days. First issue will be whether we still have power and then how many of the marquees are still in place and which bits of the site have flooded. Judging by the suggested route and timings of the storm those will also be the focus during the afternoon, with the added excitement of having stallholders and visitors to look out for....if there are still any at that point.

John and Justin mentioned the 68 mph gusts monitored by the weather station just beyond the trees. Earlier in the dark I ran several circuits of the close picking up 45 boxes from the 15 residences only to see each one topple over again. My blue container was at number eight but the bank details had flown out of it along with the cereal packets and all the local newspapers with the latest propaganda about not feeding ducks. Lids were flying in all directions and in the end I felt I had to get off the grass immediately outside neighbours' bedrooms.

Some heavy rain again this morning accompanied by a strong and chilly wind. In other words, a typical Easter Bank Holiday Monday. Christmas Day was a better day than this by far.

Well, fingers crossed, breath held and all that, but oop 'ere, like, we've had next to nowt of promised filthy weather to date. Wind strong, temp low, but.....no rain.

Lovely weather out there, I might go out for a walk, even though rather fresh and windy still. I have set out what I wanted to achieve with my current musical project, so good time for a breather.

Quite a lot of minor wind damage around here - biggish branches etc - and two panes blown out of one of the upstairs flats on the windward side, which I didn't hear happen amid a lot of general banging about on a rather sleepless night. At least we're on the northern side of the Crystal Palace ridge here, (lovely views across London to the Heath on clear days), and so get a little shelter when the strongest winds are from the south. And there's another largish block immediately to the west. Surrounding districts seem to have fared worse: trees down in Forest Hill to the north-east and damage to Norwood Junction four miles to the south-west; a Victorian pub had its roof ripped off in Battersea, and in Greenwich extraordinary pics of a tall crane bent over double, narrowly missing a pub with 14 residents on the upper floors apparently.

Strong winds are common in March and April, as the global circulation adjusts seasonally and the temperature differential increases between the Arctic, at its coldest at this time of year, and a warming subtropical N Atlantic; but it's not common to experience lows of this intensity crossing the south of the country by this stage. Hopefully it'll prove to be the last of this winter - a changeable week is forecast but with gradually moderating winds by Thursday, and high pressure is promised after that.

Yes - similar conditions in this bit of the Pennines, too; except no strong winds, thankfully. The ground shows that there was some garden-friendly rain last night, but nothing to disturb sleep, and mostly sunny all day.

Should get a bit wrmer where you are by Sunday, Drac, but only a temporary hint of the summer we all hope will come in due time.

Well, that's as maybe. Thanks for comfort....

............. but...it's got worse and worse as the day lurches on.............at the mo it is seriously nasty, VERY cold, wind lashing freezing rain at the house.
Feeling very sorry for those in Scotland and the Outer Islands - if this lot comes your way, it'll be gales and / or snow.
