Ah well, marthe, that's over there. Over here, in parts of the country not a million miles from here, there'd be people buying it and mixing it with other ingredients* to make (very un-martini-like) cocktails. Hence the VGLs Anna mentioned.

*Ingredients like bootpolish, hair lacquer, cheap red wine - that gives a drink known as "electric soup". I believe that some afficionados used to bubble coal gas through it, with interesting results if they were smoking at the time. Whether today's natural gas works as well I have no idea.

well it being the day the world ends etc this brought a smile

An atheist and entrepreneur from North Hampshire, Bart Centre, is enjoying a boost in business for Eternal Earth-bound Pets, which he set up to look after the pets of those who believe they will be raptured.

He has more than 250 clients who are paying up to $135 (£83) to have their pets picked up and cared for after the rapture.

They would be disappointed twice, he told the Wall Street Journal. "Once because they weren't raptured and again because I don't do refunds."

I'm confused. I thought VGLs were something to do with women's bums...

CDJ, Haven't you heard? The match has been brought forward to today. Kick off 4.00 pm. If they need extra time, they're sunk, but at least we'll know the outcome of the Cup Final.

Like you, I thought Bart Centre's remark highly amusing.

And all because I said my tape of the Britten Serenade sounded odd. Think I will drink the vodka and buy a CD of the work after the review next week.

Lovely sunny day in Kent/London but drought goes on.

It certainly is. It's a very serious matter. I've no food in the house, and I haven't a clean shirt to wear tomorrow. Well, I didn't see the point.

Yes, I rather thought you meant that. Plagiarising Mr Shankly. You're right about the time zones. What's Hawaii? 10 or 11 hours behind?

All I can say is, salymap (14.36, above) has the right idea.

saly, I'm sorry about SE England. It's been coming down in bucketloads here for the last couple of hours.

I'm going to watch Dr Who. You need some culchur of a Saturday night, and if anyone can stop the world ending, he can.

I would normally be glued to Dr. Who but so have have only seen the first episode of the new series, somehow it has lost its appeal. Bring back Rose Tyler!!

Much the best idea, Saly. & perhaps after you've drunk the vodka the tape might sound better?

Well, apparently 6.00pm was the key time round the world. The volcanoes, earthquakes etc were to travel west as each time zone got to 6.00. Mind you, in Scotland it could be different -
"Snow and gales . . it must be Scottish summertime. With snow falling in the Highlands, heavy rain lashing the west coast and severe weather warnings for gale force winds across the entire country from Monday"

I am worried that I have little news of Sidcup. A while ago it had been blessed with 6 or 7 drops of rain ( which was it exactly?) but since then only talk of a drought! But one assumes that the town that has everything - farms, coalfields etc. also has a vast underground reservoir!

Amen to that, Anna! Somehow can't warm up to this Dr. and his sidekicks. No chemistry whatsoever.

We're still here, grim weather and all. Saly, I hope that Sidcup has had more than 6 or 7 drops. If it were possible, I'd send you our surplus rain. The sun shone yesterday but it was only an enormous tease. Today we're back to chill and clouds.

I'm glad that all the footie stuff is over for the time being and that the right teams (whatever they may be) have stayed up and not been relegated. Makes for much more pleasant evenings chez marthe.
