It's so that people are aware, prepared to take action and consequently can't blame the Met Office for not telling them when they lose their roof tiles or get flooded! I think it stems from the really bad storms (the ones that washed away the railway line at Dawlish, etc.) being named St. Jude and St. Crispin by the tabloids and the idea caught on.Originally posted by mangerton View Post
However, I am against it for the simple reason of the boy who cried Wolf, because no storm affects all the UK at the same time, illustrated by Petrushka above saying it's just been a damp squib - we'll get so used to dismissing and ignoring named storms as not affecting us that when a proper one strikes we'll be all at sea unprepared.

Mixed day today in this bit of the Pennines: clear skies and sunshine this morning - right up to the point when I was furthest from home on my walk, at which point the heavens opened with a downpour of heavy drizzle. This stopped about half-an-hour after I got back in, and the sun came back out - y'know: daring me!
