Seriously - similar 'dessert sushi' colours at sunset here as I bowled along through the Park
Yes - it only lasted 10mins/quarter-of-an-hour, but it was a real breath-taker and spirit-lifter after a dull, dark, grey day.

Last night the sky was absolutely clear - perfect star-gazing conditions (street-lighting excepted) - and colder than it has been for a long time. I'd been expecting frost this morning, but the drizzle has returned and no sign that frost occurred.

Northern Fells - now snowing on tops and even a bit lower with growing intensity as I write. Won't last, but magic against the grey of the sky.
Earlier on in the night, one of the most fab displays of stars for moths.

And there I was trying to be subtle, thinking "moths" to the nth degree.

It's raining here now - I should have gone out earlier, instead of glueing myself to this messageboard. Nice rainbow now appearing to the north, though.

Yes I'm afraid t'is true. There hasn't actually been that much rain in their immediate vicinity; more a question of the loitering frontal system's rain band intensifying when the easterlies bearing it came smack up against the mountains to the west, causing considerable orographic uplift and moisture build-up, with the resulting increased precipitation offloading into the eastward-flowing rivers in the region.

What a horrible weekend. Yesterday at lunchtime it started raining ... and it really hasn't stopped (brief respite this am), at the mo it's tipping down, dark and COLD!! Not managed to even get to 5 degrees. I think I'd rather it warm and wet again rather than this cold and wet that means putting the heating on! Will we get snow?

My brother has just done a flit from S. Devon to N. Cornwall and is now in a hamlet near Port Isaac ... hmm - that's my Summer hols sorted!!

                          Hi Anna

I'm afraid that with the winds going around more to a north-westerly, you may well be likely to be in receipt of some snow over the next week as cold inland nights are met by south-eastward moving fronts, and any rain over warmer coastal areas remains as snow when it comes inland. On this side of the country we'll be relatively sheltered by the Cotswolds and Chilterns - that is, unless a low forms in the northwesterly flow if it slackens, and then gets stuck, thus producing snowfall more widespread than in showers.

A line of thunderstorms is just now passing eastwards along the line of the N Downs. I've been watching its progress since it appeared in the vicinity of Glastonbury asn hour and a half ago. The enormous cumulonimbus associated with it looks closer than 10 miles away - which gives some indication of its size, which is pretty huge for a winter Cb, more what you'd expect on a warm humid summer afternoon. The air temperature here hasn't exceeded 6.5 C today, and for inland showers to develop in winter usually requires ground shade temperatures more than 8 C in order to generate enough convection. This is why one sees the greatest shower activity down over the English Channel in winter, where convection feeds off the > 8 C sea surface temperatures. In summer showers generate more readily over the land. To get showers over the land in winter at < 8 C requires additional so-called "forcing", eg orographically where an airstream hitting elevated ground is forced upwards, or where you have an upper trough line of low pressure, where faster moving air pushes its way into relatively calm air, rather as along a cold front.

Beautiful sunset here now, everything glowing orange in the distance. Bad weather danger past - for now!

I know you must have had something, BBM, because you were on the bottom end of that line of thunderstorms!

As to next week, it's going to be quite a bit colder, but only extremely so in Scotland; at present the details are murky, however. And no pun intended!

I'll check and see of "Brummie Simon" has anything definite on offer.

                                Here's Gary's short-term forecast from Simon's site:

More or less what I've said above.

Lightning flashes now appearing on the lightning map in the vicinity of Saffron Walden and Sawbridgeworth!
