Stormy Weather

I removed six inches (or 15 cm; I'm ambidextrous) of snow from my car this morning, and carefully drove to work. There's hardly a soul here, and we're closing at 12. There are no buses in Dundee today. All schools, colleges etc in the area including Angus and Fife are shut.

Morning all, the good old British weather, always something to say about it. I hear from various emails and phone calls within the last hour that things are shutting down all around in Kent/SE London. Boots the Chemist, postal deliveries, trains, buses, all closed or stopped. The old comment about 'how does Europe mainland manageto keep going' comes to mind. I suppose it's so unusual here that no one prepares. Keep warm and if you are driving, drive carefully. saly

... and here in Portsoy we are accumulating ICE. Hovering at 0 c / 32F ( I am ambidextrous, too ) makes all this wet wet snow with intermittent rain a season of ICE and of course wind accompanies nearly all weather here on the North Sea.

So, here is a hand game we have been playing .. ..

Salymap, so fine to see you this first morning of December. I keep trying to enlarge the font plus use a colour for the font but to no avail. Tho not a need, it is wonderful that FF placed this up. We are a civil community and I notice in these past couple of days many are writing more of their character.

Just looking at 100 or so 4 year old Oaks and Hawthornes I have on my wall in pots [ready to plant out on the moors next year]. Marvelling at how they shut down /go into statis, and then will revive when weather gets warmer....Mind you my cold feet ; creeping up into my ankles and calves, are telling me this may be happening to ME too....

I can now vouch for johnb's recommendation for the snow grippers already mentioned ... they are amazingly effective in both snow and ice. As an added bonus they also seem to work on indoor surfaces like vinyl. My initial fear was that after staying upright in frozen outdoor conditions, I would then head indoors to a shop/pub and it (and any sniggering onlookers) would have the last laugh. My only warning is that they need a strongish pair of hands to stretch around the footwear which might prove awkward for some folk, but given their proven effectiveness it might be well worth having a separate pair of boots with the grippers permanently installed.

An excellent buy, especially, I suggest, for any older folk here with brittle bones!

The only (minor) caution is that you need to take a little care when walking on terrazzo type flooring with the YakTraxs (as used in supermarkets, etc).

You are so right johnb. Sometimes I take them off when the store is tiled. ( bit of a bother ) So many people inquire as to where to purchase them when they see them on our winter boots.
