We're to have an item on PM now. Just heard a busker claim to be a Christian but all the same to need to make the contested noise because it's his daily bread.

A Breakfast style concert, if the clock strikes the quarter hours.

May I suggest that you go to a few events like this

Keep up to date with events organised or hosted by City, University of London. We have events for many audiences including Students, Staff and Alumni.

Thanks, Vox Humana and Caliban (!) for your well-considered answers to a probably unanswerable question. I'd like to see the Abbey resolve this conflict of interest courteously and off its own bat without expecting the local authority to ride in to its rescue.

Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 noise in the street from musical instruments may be a statutory nuisance and the Local Authority is able to take legal action to abate the nuisance and prohibit or restrict its recurrence; this may include the seizure of musical instruments and amplification equipment.

that a funeral service should be disrupted I think is appalling

I might love being whipped, but I'd rather not try it.

Acoustic events in Peasholm Park, Scarborough consist of an electronic keyboard, electric and bass guitars and an amplified singer. Real acoustical music is beyond their comprehension.

But I know you like Elgar - though your views on The Dream of Gerontius are well known.

As is real amplified music beyond yours Some instruments, & some music, are designed to be used with amplification. (Oh, & haven't you said that if Bach had been alive today he would have used the latest technology for his music - so there's no reason not to use amplified & electronic instruments)

Isn't that sort of amplification to make the music audible rather than to make it very, very loud?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
