    BBC Children's Hour

Talk of WWII revives many happy memories of Children’s Hour – Uncle Mac, Uncle David, Mompty and Peckham, Ballet Shoes and so on.

That leads me to ask if anyone recalls a series about a mad professor type intent on destruction who was being pursued by someone whose assistant was a Welsh lad who was fond of saying ‘Diolchs’. The enemy always seemed to be doomed in the last episode but survived his well-deserved end
By chance I heard the Shostakovich 5th in a Third Programme broadcast and the serial’s music included two extracts from the1st movement.

An answer to this query will then leave only two others I’d like to resolve before I die.

Don't remember that, but I do remember 'Counterspy', Regional Round, and David Davies eerie narration of the serial of 'The Box of Delights' - I still recall his 'the wolves are running....'

Is this the one? Or possibly one of its sequels?

The Box of Delights and The Midnight Folk are still a great read. The music for the Childrens Hour adaptation was Victor Hely-Hutchinsons Carol Symphony. I'd love to hear Toytown again --- "I'm only a poor little laaaaaamb! "

          Plenty of Mr Grousers here?

Probably for misquotation. I think perhaps it was "It ought not to be allowed!"?

I expect you realise that Radio 4Extra is currently spending an hour each Sunday with Toytown etc. (9am and 5pm)

I'm afraid not, subcontrabass as I was way beyond listening to Children's Hour in 1960.

Baaah! Thank you Dennis. Typing is not easy with my little hooves, and sometimes my thinking is a little woolly.

I loved Dennis the Dachshund and his German word order - not to mention the fact that he was a sympathetic German character at a time when there weren't many about on radio.

Ernest the Policeman, Mr Mayor.... lovely nostalgia!

How about Jane's dachsund Fritzy? He was always on hand in the Daily Mirror comic strip with the heroine, especially when some of her clothing went missing on a regular basis This was a great morale raiser for the troops!

But when I started learning German myself, I knew there was something terribly wrong - he used to end his sentences Was it not? as though the German phrase was Nicht war? instead of - as any true German would know - Nicht wahr?

I don't remember that, but I didn't begin to learn German until I was fourteen, by which time the details of Dennis's language were quite hazy!
