    Frank Shipway 1935-2014

This is very sad news. The conductor Frank Shipway has died aged 79 after being involved in a car accident on Tuesday.

    There's a report here: http://slippedisc.com/2014/08/road-t...tor-is-killed/

Ah! This is terrible news - a much more impressive Musician than quite a few more famous names, his work with the Forest Philharmonic Orchestra in the 1980s was astonishing. (A far better Strauss Four Last Songs with Jill Gomez than any heard at the Proms in the past decade not the least of their achievements).

    RIP and thanks, FS

For me, his Alpine Symphony recording was a performance Barbirolli might have given. I can think of no higher praise.

Thanks for sharing. Have been meaning to buy the Alpine for ages and it now goes to the top of the shopping list.

Oh sad news. His Mahler 5 with the RPO is outstanding. RIP.

There was an admitedly short-lived Thread a couple of weeks ago, HS: http://www.for3.org/forums/showthrea...=frank+shipway

Well, whilst his behaviour was detestable (and, if the response of Colin Davis is typical, did him more harm professionally than good) for the audiences he attracted, the Music-Making was superb. The results he got were, for my money, preferable to those of that other similarly behaved task-master, Lorin Maazel.

Having sampled the recordings i can hear why he generates praise. I hope some of his work appears on Spotify soon.

Prompted by this sad thread I bought a very cheap second hand copy of the Mahler 5 . An absolutely terrific record - perhaps not how I should like to hear it every day but edge of your seat stuff .

On that note anyone heard his Shostakovich 10 he also recorded with Tring ?

The Mahler 5 is quite magnificent I have played it three times this week and it is superbly recorded . There are second-hand copies on Amazon going for a song .

Bought a copy of the Shostakovich 10 - it is another terrific record . Boring Shipway certainly wasn't . The circumstances of his death seem sadly to have deprived him of an Indian summer in the recording studio - he also conducted on Christian Poltera's recording of the Hindemith and Walton Cello Concertos and if it was true that he had become wiser and more patient with age as the reports from Brazil also suggested he could have had a fine time in his eighties .

Didn't know much about this conductor. eBay has some more, including a BIS recording of the Alpine Symphony - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Frank-Shi...EAAOSwc-tY6AOT
