    A friend of mine made the remark that RA was one of those figures that you had hoped would always be there, but he's in a much better place really. His family endured great heartache and infirmity at the end.

    At this time it is also very apt to recall his screen realisation of 'Oh What A Lovely War' which is a very strong satire on the Great War.

          Most of his great films have already been mentioned.
          He was brilliant in The Great Escape.
          Football fan too,life president of Chelsea FC.

          Top man.

            Seconded. I remember seeing him once at Stamford Bridge in the Sixties walking along with Marty Feldman. The next time I saw him was a only few years ago when he presented an MA to our daughter at the BFI. His films have accompanied me through my life.

              Completely agree about Oh What A Lovely War which is a rather splendid antidote to the current WWI-fest.

                Great tribute programme last night on BBC1, inserted in the schedule at 10.30, clearly carefully pre-produced and with insightful interviews with A Hopkins, B Kingsley, C Bergman, J Geeson, M Douglas, J Hurt... The Hopkins interview was particularly touching - e.g. about takes on 'Shadowlands' having to be abandoned because "we're picking up the sound of the director crying"... and Hopkins having not wept throughout finally breaking down on a take in Oxford .. ."and Attenborough said: 'Got you!!!' "

                It brought back to me the breadth and quality of the man's work and life.

                A true great

                PS the programme mysteriously doesn't appear to be on iPlayer. Worth looking out for a re-broadcast, perhaps at the weekend? Viewers of BBC Scotland get to see it tomorrow evening, by the way http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04h5bwm.

                  Having a senior moment here ... what's the appropriate word for a chap who recommends a programme to you, proceeds to tell you who's in it and what the choice bits are, and finishes up telling you the programme is no longer available to see ... unless you live in Scotland.

                  There's a word for a chap like that I'm sure
