      Thinking of Charles Ross's biography of Richard III in which he concluded that the evidence pointed to the fact that 'he did it' but the present-day judgement should be that he was 'a man of his time': this reminded me of Edward Colston, much commemorated in Bristol for his philanthropy, much reviled for his close connection with the slave trade. The statue of Colston in the city centre, which some say should be removed, might well be saying: "I was a man of my time."

      It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

        Ferret on M34 has a slightly naughty comment on pigeons and Statues.

          Anther view of the Bach statue in front of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. This one shows his left side coat pocket turned inside out, indicating his chronic lack of money. He might be saying to the City Council: "Wo ist mein Geld?"

            Yes there's a joke about statues and pigeons but some way back on the thread.
            If I was a pigeon flying over the City
            I'd make the stockbrokers look thoroughly sh*tty;
            I'd sit on a cornice outside the Exchange
            And teach all the buggers to keep out of range.
